Big toe joint fusion

I am scheduled to have big toe joint fusion for arthritis. The consultant I saw last year talked about joint replacement and has now said that the NHS gold standard is fusion. I am concerned that fusion will change my way of walking and put pressure on my knees, hips and back. Has anyone had this procedure and does it affect your walking please?

Hello fritherdog Mr J has had two operations to fuse joints in his foot due to arthritis and also an ankle replacement. It has changed his way of walking for the better. Prior to the operations his mobility was poor and constantly using a stick altered his gait. His walking is much improved and he now goes to the gym on a regular basis. I hope that this reassures you about the future after joint fusion to your foot. Kind regards.

Thank you for your reassurance.

I’ve had a big toe joint fused to deal with a bunion and it hasn’t altered the way I walk, just made it much less painful.

I had both big toe joints fused 15 years ago & have had no trouble since. Before I was in constant pain & unable to walk at all some days now I can walk for miles.

Friend had a fusion and said it has changed the way she walks, slower and some pain, it has been 9 months since surgery so perhaps needs more time to heal completely

Had done and all the pain gone, so glad.

Just can't move the toe.

I was advised to have this, but had two friends who had a bad time with this op and on reflection I refused the op The surgeon told me I was making a poor decision but within a year my toe had somehow righted itself and has never been painful since so personally I m glad I didn’t have it done

Like Bluebelle I was advised to have this procedure but was worried that it might affect how I walked, so decided not to have it done.
Though it’s a bit stiff , and has even been broken since, am relatively pain free and no regrets.

Had 2 toe joints fused , not the most painless of procedures but best thing I ever did . No pain now, walk normally and can even run
Hope it works as well for you

I understand your concerns about big toe joint fusion and how it might impact your walking. I haven't had the procedure myself, but I've done some research and spoken to others who have undergone it.

Fusion is often recommended because it can provide long-term relief from pain and improve stability, especially when arthritis is advanced. While it's true that fusion will limit the movement of your toe joint, many people adjust their walking pattern over time. Some have reported that the initial adjustment period can lead to temporary discomfort in the knees, hips, or back, but physical therapy and proper footwear can help mitigate these issues.

In addition, some people find that nature meds supplements can support joint health and alleviate inflammation, though it's important to consult with your doctor before starting any supplements, especially when planning surgery.

It might also be worth discussing with your consultant if there are any specific exercises or supports you can use post-surgery to help with your gait. Hearing from others who have had the procedure and speaking with a physical therapist might also give you a clearer idea of what to expect.

I had big toe fusion in my right big toe about 5 years ago and have been very pleased with the operation. No pain now and it has not affected the way I walk. I also had a different type of fusion in my big left toe over 20 years ago and the operation has changed significantly, much better result with the later surgery. I can recommend it.
