Hubby who has poor eyesight is accidentally weeing partly on the floor every time. I can’t persuade him to sit down to wee. What is the best and most efficient way of dealing with this please?

merlotgran Sun 04-Aug-24 13:43:40

Suggest he clears it up himself?

Patsy70 Sun 04-Aug-24 14:03:09

Is this a serious question?

Has he had his eyes tested recently if not he needs to get them tested . Also he needs to see his GP as he may have a prostrate problem which can be treated. You could get into with the incontinence nurse and they could supply you with pads to put on the floor also suggest ways to improve your husband's aim . The pads are like what people use for puppies. Also he may take advice from a medical professional about sitting down to wee . As you asking him to do it injuries his pride . Sorry can't think of the correct words for that sentence. I had to talk very firmly to my dad about sitting down to wee as he was unsteady on his feet but he did it when I pointed out if he fell mom couldn't get him up and he would wet himself . Had to make my husband do the same the last 4 months of his life because of his cancer . His last few days we had a commode and I had it right by the bed and lifted him on and off it which he hated . But we do things for love .

Men find it harder to admit they can't do things than woman . It's the men man I take care of woman thing 😁. Like silver backed gorillas .

I noticed a smell at the base of our downstairs toilet, particularly when several male visitors had been. I think a lot of men don’t seem to worry about “finishing off” properly. My solution has been to buy a couple of old fashioned toilet mats and this has worked much better.

I persuaded DH to sit down.

Suggest he clears it up himself?

I agree. The person who makes the mess should clear it up.

Salti Sun 04-Aug-24 14:51:22

My solution. A spray mop with the washable heads. It lives next to the toilet. I put a mix of water and zoflora in the bottle. Every evening I replace the head and the old one goes in the washer. To be fair we only usually have a few drops here.

I know this problem very well and the stubbornness that goes with it. If its bad eyesight I wouldn't trust the person to clean it up properly I would just clean myself.

You say his sight is poor. I've no idea if this would help but you can get a light to put in the toilet (usually so you can find it in the night). It may be worth a try, it may concentrate his mind that it's a genuine concern to you and he really should sit to pee.

Why cant you just tell him. Of course if he has advanced dementia or doesn't know what he’s doing, that's different, you'll have to ho with him each time or he might need pads.

Put a washable mat around the loo and sling in the washer every few days, on Lino or wooden floors it could become ingrained and discolour the floor and smell indefinitely. We had this prob with my old dad many moons ago, tho he was suffering from dementia at the time.
My husband sits due to a dodgy prostate making weeing a long affair.
Would not ask but tell your husband to sit in future because he is weeing on the floor.
Is there a reason why you can’t do this?
Seems like a no brainer to me.

It’s a man thing, as they stand and don’t always notice dribbles, especially during the night.
You could use a toilet mat and change and wash them regularly or use kitchen roll and Flash wipes. If you have a second loo in the house use the one that he doesn’t!

Same issue here. He can't bend down to keep it clean so I bought him this: www.amazon.co.uk/Speedmop-Cleaner-Starter-Mopping-System/dp/B0CCNNV9CB?tag=gransnetforum-21
and keep it next to the toilet.

In the 58 years I was with DH he never left sprinkles around the bowl or on the floor, he always sat.
DS is the complete opposite, I go with wipes and clean round the toilet and the floor after each visit otherwise it is not pleasant for his DDs who walk around in stocking feet.

Macadia Mon 05-Aug-24 08:33:54

Men standing at the toilet should be illegal in our world. Just sit down please!

Callistemon213 Mon 05-Aug-24 09:03:46

Prostate problem?

Apparently, so I am reliably informed, just when they think they've finished .........

Time for a chat.

Not a problem now, but when we had two boys at home, I thought we had a leak from the toilet.
When I called the plumber, he asked, " have you got boys?"and said "Well tell them to aim straight!"
Problem solved.

My DH says he can’t go sitting down!

Patsy70 Mon 05-Aug-24 09:08:53

Men are a different species, aren’t they? 🙄. Women wipe, why not men? I wouldn’t have a smelly mat around the lavatory, much prefer a disinfected mop!
