Bath or shower

I’m going to get a new bathroom. It’s very small so am thinking of installing a walk-in shower rather than having a bath. I rarely use the bath and it’s only me now so it makes absolute sense. The only concern is for when I sell (although I don’t think I’ll ever move now unless I’m forced to by circumstance!) If a family with young children buy they’ll most probably want a bath but of course they could use a baby bath in the shower. Your thoughts?

A good ten years ago and took the advice of friends. I should have not listened. I hate, as do all my guests of lifting legs over the bath rim. The bath must have only been used 5 times. Everyone wants to use the tiny shower in the laundry room. As for the advice I was given, it was based on ‘sale value’. Well I shall not be around or very few people bathe in a bath, water ecology.

Shower for us every time. I now can’t stand from sitting in a bath and Mr C slipped and fell getting out the last time we had one in a hotel en suite. We love our shower, we put in a permanent fold up seat which isn’t used but might be one day. Personal preference for us. Think you’ve made a good decision OP, it’s best to keep yourself safe and comfortable.

I would recommend as big a shower tray as possible to allow for a shower stool and for a second person to assist.... and a flexible shower hose. And not to have the controls too high for ease of use if seated.

We turned down several properties when we were moving here because they only had a shower. Some were too small to fit a bath and a shower in so putting in a bath was not an option. No bath will devalue and hinder the sale of your home. A shower over the bath is a good idea if space is tight.

I’m with the “do what suits you” posters. It’s your home at the moment, and from what you say, for some considerable time to come. If you feel that a walk in shower will be the best option for you, then you go ahead and do it. There’s no point worrying about “what if’s” at some distant time in the future - people who buy a property will, over time, change things to suit themselves anyway, but in the meantime, you need to do what will be the best for you.
I imagine that the plumbing will not be moved about too much, that the walk in shower will use the footprint of the existing bath? You can always take a photo of how it looks now, so that any potential buyer in the future will be able to see where the bath once was.
We are fortunate enough to have room for a separate shower and bath, but the shower isn’t one with a longer tray, it’s just a normal cubicle. However, when we redo the bathroom, we are going to have the bath out and a walk in shower with longer shower tray so that there’s room for a seat. We very rarely use the bath now, and my husband finds it quite difficult getting out of the bath so prefers the shower. We are not going to worry about some future potential buyer, but do what’s best for us.

I might add, that, yes, a shower over the bath can be an option, but not really if you struggle to step into the bath and out of it again - if your mobility isn’t good, it’s not the best solution.

We've a walk in shower, works well and suits us. If we must, we put a baby bath in our shower for grandchildren, works well.

Spencer2009 Mon 12-Aug-24 16:58:30

While house hunting I’ve dismissed houses with no bath. But do what’s right for you.

I agree.

Nobody I know uses a bath, but you must do what suits.

Our enormous walk in shower is perfect, easy to clean -it sparkles, magic for hair, low water use, 2 showers at the ends. Perfect in all ways.

It is a matter of choice. We and quite a number of people we know prefer baths, including one AC and a grandchild.

I think most young people , want a quick daily shower before they go to work. Older people have difficulty getting in and out of a bath ( I do 😂). So, if space is an issue, my advice is to have a nice shower cubicle. It will suit both old and young.
The other option is to have a Bath with an overhead shower. Will suit everyone …

mokryna Mon 12-Aug-24 19:18:59

Don’t forget to not only have an overhead shower but also a handheld attachment. A famous hotel chain in Blackpool does not have them and I don’t want to wet my hair every time. This also happened in the USA
Is it a man who designs bathrooms?

I think you should absolutely do what suits you OP. Showers as opposed to baths divide opinions, it's entirely down to personal preference, I'm even considering turning our main bathroom into a wet room, making us bath less. The reason being I have yet to have a guest come and stsy who wants to soak in the bath, therefore have to make the en suite available. I know estate agents talk would be "you will be limiting your market, 2 bathrooms, no bath". Don't care!, I'm living in the now. The bath never gets used.

Agreed, sale matters not either, just your preference now.

If you do walk-in, 2 heads plus 2 handhelds is best, to me.

Hubby wanted to get a shower installed years ago, I wasn't too keen but I'm glad now that we did, because I couldn't get out of a bath now, now I wish we had got a walk in shower, as there's a step up to the shower, and the older you get the harder it is to get in and out ..

Mollygo Mon 12-Aug-24 20:01:04

Personal choice, Absolutely!
Persuaded that it would help sale value we kept our bath, which hasn’t been used since DGC have been old enough to wash themselves.
Now it sits unused, except it provides an excellent drying area for clothes or my dripping swim suit and shoes.
The shower is great for everyone else and economical as well.

Think firstly if your needs.

I have a small bathroom and found I was no longer enjoying a long luxurious bath. I was filling the bath and wasting water so I opted to change to just a shower.
I saved so much on my fuel bills and absolutely love it.
Do what suits YOU now.

Babs03 Tue 13-Aug-24 13:11:35

Don’t like a bath so we have a shower room, haven’t had a bath for years - I know that sounds bad 😂
When we visit family they have showers not baths, they put the baby bath on the floor of the shower and fill it, then use the removable shower head to wash the baby.
Our 2 year old grandson takes a shower with his mummy or daddy, they wear swim suits not out of modesty but because he now points to their bodies and laughs.

dragonfly46 Tue 13-Aug-24 22:25:27

Our en-suite has a large walk in shower and a drop down stool attached to the wall for when and if we need it. It doesn’t take up as much room as a stool.

dragonfly46 Tue 13-Aug-24 22:28:01

My DH has trouble climbing into the bath at my DS’s to have a shower. Walk in with no door is so much easier.

SuperTinny Tue 13-Aug-24 23:20:44

My bath never needs cleaning.......................... but I do dust it every so often smilesmilesmile

🤣🤣🤣
DH wears swim trunks when he takes the dog into the shower (quickest way of washing it and she likes it.)
The dog doesn’t laugh, she’s just makes him feel nervous!

LaCrepescule Wed 14-Aug-24 08:44:54

Yes, I can take the dog into the shower - he loves water! Not at all concerned about the effect it may have when I sell - a bath could easily be reinstated and there’s plumbing for one downstairs as well. Went to CP Hart yesterday to choose the fittings - really excited!

Athrawes Wed 14-Aug-24 10:57:28

I feel safer in an ordinary shower these days but I used to love a soak in the bath. I did think of a bath with a door but that sounds a bit chilly while waiting to empty it!!
