Hand arthritis & wearing jewellery

Magnetic clasps are really quite strong and I do appreciate having that option. You may want to have a jeweler switch out your favorites.

Not arthritis, but other health issues have made my fingers and my husband's fingers different sizes. I was so disappointed not to be able to wear my wedding and engagement rings . He said he didn't want to get the original rings altered, so we bought two bigger wedding bands (this time they match!)

With magnetic clasps, a lot depends on the quality. I have a necklace I don't particularly like but it has the strongest magnet, but others I do like don't have good magnets in.

I gave up magnetic clasped bracelet as it kept connecting to metal restaurant tables & popping off my wrist
Very annoying !

This type of fastening is fairly easy and secure. A jeweller might fit it. I got this necklace from Next.

Thank you Judy. That's interesting.

Yes Lyndie I have the same problem. Have already had my wedding ring and engagement ring altered a few years ago. My fingers have got worse and I still can't wear my rings, especially in the Summer. I have bought a couple of cheap silver rings in different sizes to see what suits best before I go to the further expense of having my original rings altered again.

I can't get my rings over my arthritic knuckles, so I am having a ring, I particularly like altered. There are 3 ways to choose from. Stretched with a spring, 2 springs put on to open and stretched and 2 beads put in. I am waiting for quotes. I don't suppose it will be cheap but I think, for me, it will be worth to have 1 ring on my finger.

I have bought these fasteners and used on my jewellery, they are very firm and easy to connect. Highly recommended.

Thank you, I’ll definitely investigate these further

I bring the clasp round to the front and do it up in the mirror. I do need biggish loops on them and I am lucky enough to have a husband who buys me nice necklaces.

These clip onto the original claps of the jewellery so there’s no need for a jeweller.

I've just bought these from Amazon are they are much stronger than the first ones I had. Have tested them for a couple of days and I Would recommend them

If they have a lobster clasp, you would have to remove them. All you need is a pair of pliers.

BigBopper Mon 26-Aug-24 22:10:25

All my necklaces have magnetic clasps on them but I would not use them on bracelets because I always seem to catch the bracelet on my sleeve.

Georgesgran Mon 26-Aug-24 21:52:50

Look on Amazon or the jewellery channel websites.
No need to remove the existing clasps if they’re ring and loop. I’ve got a heavy bead necklace that came with a magnetic clasp and it’s quite secure.

I used to make pieces of jewellery ( in the days when my hands worked) and often put magnetic clasps on them.
Someone who is a crafter could alter it for you, because you would probably need to remove the original clasp.

The arthritis in my fingers is progressing and making it very difficult to work the clasps on necklaces especially I’m aware of the magnetic fastening but do they really work well, my jewellery isn’t expensive but has great sentimental value so I worry about losing them
Does anyone have any experience of these and does the original clasp have to be removed to put the magnetic one on?
