Gransnet abbreviations

I'm getting confused by the acronyms and abbreviations on here that seem to make sense to the posters but aren't explained in the 'official' list of 'abbreviations'. They seem to have been made-up.
Eg what does RTFT mean?

Imagine if the husband was dearly departed, and deaf?

😂

I actually think telling people to read the whole thread is bossy and unnecessary, as if one weren't allowed to respond directly to the OP or any other single post on the thread.

I have got the impression over the years that people who feel their posts have been "ignored" are the most likely to make the, ahem, request of RTFT. What they don't seem to realise is that of course other posters will say the same as they have and that it's perfectly legitimate for there to be numerous repetitions of the same points. That's just the nature of this kind of social media.

I agree with you, who has time to RTFT? I like your interpretation too😁Read the full thread isn’t nearly as colourful.

MissAdventure Sun 08-Sept-24 15:19:35

It's absolutely pointless to comment about a situation, then, though, and people have time for that.

Whiff Sun 08-Sept-24 15:21:22

The only acronym I use is GN for Gransnet . I type everything else in full which means I ramble on. But if people see my name then they don't have to read what I write. But I only write about my own personal experience.

Oreo Sun 08-Sept-24 15:21:43

I think it’s ok to jump in and just answer the OP, particularly if they have a personal problem.

Witzend Sun 08-Sept-24 15:24:02

One I’ve often wanted to introduce is FGSPSPLS!

For goodness’ sake, PARAGRAPHS please!

Not that there are all that many very long posts that aren’t broken into paragraphs, but I don’t suppose I’m the only one who finds them very trying - and will usually give them a miss.

Oreo Sun 08-Sept-24 15:27:01

If the OP is a long one I just don’t bother to read it or comment, particularly so if full of acronyms and no paragraphs and little punctuation.

Baggs Sun 08-Sept-24 15:49:08

Baggs and JJ I think it does matter a lot and nothing to do with getting irritable but the whole thread can change to almost the opposite by people not being arsed to read the few posts above them, they are so intent with what the want to say.

And again I say So What? Why do you think threads shouldn't change?

Why shouldn't people be intent to say what they want to say? Even if you don't like it.

Why is how you (anyone) want a thread to "work" more important than someone else's "intent" in response to what they have read?

All this snappiness about shoulds and shouldn'ts is just intolerance by some people not getting what THEY want.

Baggs Sun 08-Sept-24 15:51:40

The only rule on GN as I see it is not to break the guidelines HQ have set.

Baggs Sun 08-Sept-24 15:53:26

GN, guidelines apart, is essentially free ranging. I think some people just don't get that. Shame really. They'd perhaps enjoy it more if they did.

MissAdventure Sun 08-Sept-24 15:59:59

It makes no sense if has been an ongoing situation, which the op has updated throughout the thread.

Fine if people want to respond angrily to a resolved situation, and they have the time, of course, but it looks a bit daft.

I thought that was it too!

Oh dear.

Is FH Flipping Husband? (he's washed up 🙂 but left half a bowl of dirty washing up water and a dirty sink ☹)

I agree. It’s not about rules but being respectful to other posters IMO by not ignoring what has already been said.
I really dislike acronyms for relatives with D in front (for dear).
Sounds outdated and reminds me of couples frequently calling each other “dear”.

Baggs Sun 08-Sept-24 16:46:08

“It makes no sense”

“It looks a bit daft”

“I really dislike”

Easy solution: move on. Read something else 🙂
It does work as a strategy, I promise .

MissAdventure Sun 08-Sept-24 16:47:40

Thanks,
I'd never have known without your sage advice. smile

I am wondering whether or not we could introduce AWSTAT
Are we still talking about this grin

Allira Sun 08-Sept-24 17:45:34

👍 😁

Ziplok Sun 08-Sept-24 17:58:23

It depends how long the thread is when I come to it as to whether I do or don’t RTWT. This is why I wish the OP further comments were highlighted all the way through the thread so that it’s possible to skim read to them to find out if things have been resolved or not. However, GN are reluctant to do this, for some reason, which is very odd as it’s done on MN.

Galaxy Sun 08-Sept-24 19:56:39

It's done on here, it just depends on your device.

MissAdventure Sun 08-Sept-24 21:29:26

How can it be different on the same device though?
Is it different on the same device?

nanna8 Sun 08-Sept-24 23:01:03

Don’t use ‘em, don’t like ‘em. Basically.

Galaxy Mon 09-Sept-24 06:06:09

So I always see Ops posts highlighted, I am not so special it only happens to megrin. I post using a Samsung phone so I assume it is dependent on what you use to post.

Doodledog Mon 09-Sept-24 06:35:54

Not RTFT is, in my eyes incredibly rude. It assumes that the non-reader can just butt into a conversation with their thoughts and then butt out again, as though other contributors just don’t matter.

I have never known a discussion board as lax as GN on this subject - most are very unforgiving of such selfish behaviour. I have learned to respect the norms of this board but will never see not bothering to look at what others have to say as acceptable. It just doesn’t compute in my mind 😂.

MissAdventure Mon 09-Sept-24 08:42:21

I'm using a samsung phone, too, but no highlights for me.

I don’t see the point of posting on a thread if you haven’t read it all, because of course it becomes repetitive and often inappropriate. If the post has deviated too much from the original, especially towards personal disagreements, which some seem to love, and which garner the most attention, I just don’t bother.

You mean like this one!
