Cancelling TV licence

Just an anachronism really.

I think the licence is very good value to receive such varied in depth programmes. The BBC in the main offers far more variety and excellent standards of production than other providers in my opinion and no adds! We do subscribe to only one on demand provider. There are so many these days and it is so expensive to subscribe to them all and much of the content would have little appeal to me. We rarely watch the one we have as we always find something of interest.

Also what would we do without BBC New? OH has to have to have access to that!

One word of warning though if you move house and use Royal Mail redirection, they inform TV licensing authority.
How this is allowed under GDPR I have no idea!

It's allowed as you can clearly opt out of Royal Mail sharing your details with other organisations when completing the online form.

We did that, as did my daughter!

I know a surprising amount of people who do not have a licence. Ways of viewing, especially amongst the young, has changed dramatically.
Young parents especially, are time poor.
And they certainly do not sit down at 6pm or 10pm to watch the News!

Personally, DH and I are not cancelling. Though he wouldnt mind doing so, sometimes.

Probably should have informed them but I get you have a 101 things to sort out when a death occurs- they probably think she’s just cancelled & still watching 😞

I think lot of the dramas on the bbc do end on Netflix ?

I only ever watch on demand these days - Now, Netflix and Apple TV+. There doesn’t seem much point in having a licence but what’s really made me want to cancel it is the fact that TV licensing has been harassing me and threatening enforcement officer visits regarding my mum’s licence. She died 9 months ago and advising them of this simply wasn’t top of mind! I did cancel her direct debit so I can’t see why they couldn’t have left it there.
If they’d been a bit more sensitive and made an enquiry as to why she didn’t have a licence, I’d feel differently. But to be threatened with fines etc has made my mind up that I now no longer one. I used to love the BBC but what with this and the Huw Edwards business feel that it’s an anachronism that is no longer needed.
Do any of you not have a licence?

Yes we don’t have one, cancelled after putting Cliff Richard through the wringer. They are like the gestapo!
Fill in your form stating you don’t watch live tv or record- you can still watch catch-up but not the I-player- they should leave you alone for two years.
There is a guy on YouTube called chillijoncarne (he does info on the tv licence, very interesting)

I don't think we are ready to give up the TV license even though we only seem to watch streaming channels. It was painful enough giving up the landline as DH says its unnecessary. I miss having a phone in the hall and sitting on the stairs yakking to friends and family.

You can still get all the interesting programmes on Radio 4 without a licence..

Same here, twinnytwin. I still find lots to interest me on the terrestrial channels.

I'm of a different opinion to the posters so far. I feel I get my monies worth for the licence. We don't watch many programmes live, but record Politics Live, Laura Kuenssberg etc, Sewing Bee, lots of dramas. I also dip into BBC News and (pop head below parapet) GB News. There's lots of really interesting programmes on IPlayer and I watch some on my computer in my sewing room.

Not just BBC all terrestrial Channels are rubbish in the evening the repeats are watchable but not a lot else.

We haven't wanted or needed a licence for 18 years. We don't feel we've missed out.

When we didn't renew our school TV licence, we kept getting harassed by the Licensing Authority. The fact that we had no TV and did not watch live TV on the Internet, made absolutely no difference at all. They persistent wrote to us.
They did give up in the end.
