Edinburgh restaurants - suggestions please

DH and I are spending a few days in Edinburgh soon and I would be so grateful if any Edinburgh grans could recommend a restaurant. Within walking distance of Grassmarket, as we won’t have the car. We’re both quite fit so walking a reasonable distance won’t be a problem. It’s for a celebration meal just for the two of us. Would ideally like a smartish venue, where older people are welcome, not a chain or ‘family’ restaurant. Somewhere to dress reasonably smartly for, ie for me a smartish pair of trousers and jacket (rather than my usual jeans and trainers!) We like most cuisines. No loud music please! Thanks in advance!

How about The Witchery By The Castle Restaurant, I visited last year and it was very, very good.

How about Tom Kitchin’s in Leith, it’s a shortish cab ride, but wonderful food and surroundings for a special meal.

We loved it.

The Dome is beautiful. George Street.

I remember an Italian restaurant where they didn't take bookings but people had to queue but we couldn't wait so long. Definately family run but maybe not quite what you are looking for.

Leith is a pleasant walk away so I would recommend trying some place there. A lot of expensive places near the Royal Mile are just tourist traps so I would go a little further.
I didn't try any of the above suggestions as they are way above my budget!

It's not really within walking distance of the Grassmarket (but is on several main bus routes), but the Skyline Restaurant at Tynecastle Park (home of Heart of Midlothian FC) is absolutely fantastic.

We loved Dine, which is above the Traverse Theatre

Thanks so much for your speedy responses! Plenty to look at here. We’ve often been to the Dome, but just for coffee! Always so beautifully decorated at Christmas. I didn’t realise it served evening meals.

Ooh yes, forgot about Dine - it is lovely and obviously very handy for the Grassmarket.

The Witchery is my favourite place of all - we were lucky enough to stay there for our wedding anniversary. Have a lovely celebration wherever you choose!

They have great restaurants.
Agree Tom Kitchen, Dome and The Witchery.
The Ivy is our go restaurant, if we're not sure where to go, probably a bit cheaper too?
Not been to Dine...
My DH comes from Edinburgh, I will add Dine to my list for the next time we go up.

Third vote for Dine behind the Usher Hall (and within splendid walking distance of the grassmarket)

Another is The Outsider on Geo 1V Bridge which is very convenient for Grassmarket.
