Do you ever call…..

My grandpa called me Snowy as I had very white blonde hair as a child. The nickname died with him but perhaps I should re-adopt it now that my hair is very white due to age?!

For some unknown reason, my OH has always called me by a name that is very similar to my actual name, but is also a name in its own right. Everyone we met after we got together called me the name that OH uses, and as I actually preferred it, I didn't correct them.

This only changed maybe 10 years ago, when I had a new email address that actually used my proper name - suddenly people started querying it, some quite worried that I might be upset by the fact they had been getting my name wrong, for well over 40 years in some cases.

Oh, and my parents tended to use an abbreviated form of my name.

Definitely confusing - even my older brother admitted not too long ago that he wasn't sure what my name was!

We had an uncle called Buster. It wasn't until I read his obituary a few years ago that I discovered his actual name was Marmaduke 🤣

My gran (dad's mum) - her name was Augusta but all through her life she was known as Daisy.

When my sister was small a new neighbour called her Pudge one day, our mum didn't like that and said if he had to call her anything apart from her name it had to be Pidge. He called her that up until he passed away even though she was grown up and a mum by then.

My DM was called Penny by my Grandma (her MiL) and it was ages before I knew that it wasn't her name - her maiden name was Coyne!

My husband and I use the nickname he gave me when we first met

As I work in a care home for the physically/mentally disabled one of my lovely gents who is 81 and mentally unabled ... he has the mind of someone about 7... jokingly calls me The Weirdo instead of my actual name, he's been doing that for the past 7 years when I first met him! I call him snowball which he finds equally funny!

My father chose a name for me that couldn’t be shortened, the only nickname I’ve ever had is Mrs. Fierce.

When my niece was little we added the name Murgatroyd to her real name, just for fun. So her 1st name, middle name Murgatroyd then her real surname. I think her dad started it. We often called her by all her names together. Bless her she grew up thinking it was her real name. The extra name soon got dropped when she realised we were just teasing her.

I used to call DH Angel instead of using his given name. I sometimes slipped up and used it outside of the home only realising when he would raise an eyebrow.
I had an aunt that had a very childish name, I was forty before I realised it was a nickname and she was actually called Edith.

When I was in 6th form our teacher wrote on the blackboard the name of a new student who would be joining us. His initials spelled out DIM and that's what he was known as for the next two years. He loved it! Fortunately he was bright and had a very sunny personality.

My uncle was Arthur Charles always know as Joe never knew that wasn’t his real name !

In typical Aussie fashion they add a ‘y’ to the end of my name.

My father’s name was Henry but his mother always called him Jerry which his brothers shortened to Jel but my mother and her friends called him Pat. Very confusing!

I am never called by my given name at all, just responding to several variations, six at the last count.

At school, a girl had exactly the same name as me and even our middle names started with the same initials. I was known by my first and middle names together and because my middle name can also be a surname many people forgot I had a surname. A tad confusing.

I am only known by my shortened name no one ever calls me my full name
Years ago my then husband used to always call me Pet we had a circle of US friends who all called me Pet too presumable thinking that was a shortened version of Petula Petunia or something

My husband occasionally calls me a made up variation of my name, but as he and I both go by our middle names anyway there’s enough confusion around without adding nicknames into the mix.

My music circle friends always called me Cupcake (forget why)!

My husband calls me by a nickname and I call him by a version of our surname. Unfortunately the Beatles had a record with my name but they pronounced it wrongly and lots of people say it that way!

As a child, my name was shortened by various family members - mainly three different ones. As an adult, the addition of colleagues and in laws brought more. I use my full name when I introduce myself, but some people, annoyingly, immediately shorten it.

When I was in the ten pin bowling league I was called Ferret hence my gn name. Not because I had mousy features but they said I could ferret out a strike. My other half calls me Treacle which I like.

DGD calls me by a unique variation of Granny which she still uses now at 17. She is the only one who calls me that. Her twin brother used to but decided a couple of years ago that it was “weird” so chose to call me Grandma as he wanted to be different from our other grandchildren.

My eldest dd gave me a name that is a toddler approximation of my actual name. That stuck.

Youngest dd gave MrB a name that is a toddler approximation of his name. That stuck too and I still call him it.

I had a nickname at school which I acquired during a sports day when one boy called it out - it was inappropriate as it referred to me being a fast runner, which I certainly was not. It stuck and several teachers who did not teach me (hence no class list) actually thought it was my surname.

I was christened one name but called another,which has stuck,so if someone phones and asks for me under my christened name I know they don’t know me,very handy.
