My Thyroid consultant has suggested I try Amitriptyline 10 mg to help with my broken sleep.

On looking it up I see that it can increase weight and eye pressure.

I have dry eye and am keeping the pressure down but am concerned about the drug. I’m going to ask my Optician what he thinks.

Have you had this drug and how has it affected you please ?

I have been taking 10mg twice a day since 1992 for nerve pain. 5 years ago it was increased to 10mg x 3 a day and has helped enormously with my nerve pain . Never had any side effects and even from the start it has never made me drowsy.

Like at lot of drugs in a lot higher dose it is used for depression.

Any tablet or even vitamin and mineral tablets taken over a long time your body gets used to it therefore you are addicted . That's why if you have been on a tablet for years you go through withdrawal when you have to stop it. It's just common sense .

You can get addicted to coffee if you drink a lot of it each day for years then stop your body craves it just like with smoking same thing you go through withdrawal.

Lots of scare stories here but this drug helped me enormously. Took it for a month or so, no side effects or addiction.

Baggs

*On looking it up I see that it can increase weight and eye pressure.*

can is the operative word. It might not increase weight or eye pressure in your case. If you need better sleep maybe give it a go, keep an eye on your weight and get your eyes checked after a few months.

Thanls Baggs. I'll try a small dose. Amnon drops for eye pressure but my sleep is almost nonexistent.

Took 10mg for years to help sleep. Was told by the doctor it was non addictive but anything that helps sleep becomes addictive - scared to come off it as I felt I would have a bad nights sleep. And felt groggy in the morning.

I was given it for nerve pain and whilst it worked it left me feeling very dozy and thick headed. My GP changed me to another drug Lofepramizine, which is still a tricyclic antidepressant also prescribed for nerve pain, that was much better, it's a more modern drug than amitryptaline but does the same thing. If it doesn't suit you ask for a different type of medication

I've had Amitriptyline for severe migraines , which were not relieved from my normal medications .
It worked very quickly .
The side effects certainly concern me .
It's not one of my regular regime .

Every person is different.

However, mum was given it for pain in her head, which it fixed, apparently it was also compatible with all her other medications.

But, it was stopped by the hospital, with a another, whilst admitted, as it played havoc with her bladder.

So, another pill mum can't have.

(She's currently "testing" a new pain pill on her terms...... So far so good!)

I'm on 10mg for pain. I've no side affects apart from a dry mouth and it's helping.
Best to take it around 8pm so then you shouldn't feel groggy in the morning .
In the past I've had times when I've come off it with no withdrawal symptoms.
Maybe try it and see how you go.

I have been on it for 20 years at a larger dose. I had no side effects-it is for chronic nerve pain. Not sure if it helps or not as the pain has not gone away. But my gp says it will be worse without it.

I started taking two tablets at night ten years ago. Chemo for bowel cancer then left me with neuropathy in my hands and feet and the tablets really helped, as well as being a very mild anti-depressant and helping me sleep. Am now on chemo again for metastatic bowel cancer and, again, these pills are really a help. I haven't put on any weight.

Bea65 I don’t have pain or migraines so it is just to help my broken sleep. I haven’t completely given up I am seeking extra advice from a good pharmacist. I am hoping to be given Phenergan to take on occasions of a few bad nights sleep in a row.

I’m surprised how many GN members are on this drug.

I have also been prescribed the 10mg dosage for nerve pain. I have been taking it for a couple of years with no side effects, and no weight gain.

My daughter was prescribed these for chronic migraines when she was doing her teacher training course. They worked well and has been reducing her dosage over the years but cannot give them up completely. When she was first on them I didn’t realise that they made her sleep. We were away for the weekend & came in so late she forgot to take them so took them at breakfast. What a mistake never to be repeated. We had booked out of one accommodation after breakfast & was moving into another one which we could not check into till 2pm. By the time the tablets kicked in she was like a walking zombie. She doesn’t remember much of that day.

OP don’t give up so soon- I’ve been on 25mgs for 12 years.. it helps with over active bladder issues and pain management- yes I’ve put on weight but cannot legitimately say it’s because of Amitriptyline also use Tear-lac.. IMO it’s worth trying out

I was prescribed it for chronic back pain it worked for awhile but I found the effect wore off .when I mentioned this to my doctor he suggested doubling the dose, I was not happy with his suggestion as I felt that i was becoming a bit fuzzy headed and had difficulty remembering words in conversations I looked into effects of this drug and it said there was an increased risk of dementia. As for sleeping it did nothing for me,I have decided to stop taking it as I feel it is of no benefit to me, only possible risk

I’m on 30mg of amitriptyline a day to help me sleep. I can’t say I get a good nights sleep though. My doctor advised me not to take it after 8pm as taking it later would make me feel drowsy the next day. I have an alarm on to remind me to take it at 7:45pm and I’m in bed for 10pm. I haven’t noticed any adverse side effects and I’ve never felt drowsy in the morning.

I’ve been taking Amitriptyline since my son was a baby to aid my sleep and he is 36 years old now! When I had a stressful job I was taking 70 mg but I am retired and take 10mg. I always slept badly, even as a child. This really works for me with no side effects in all of these years.

SillyNanny321 Tue 07-Jan-25 16:34:48

Around 25 years ago a doctor prescribed 10mg as a help with very bad migraines. They certainly helped as the migraines have been mild for all these years. When I had anxiety problems over my landlord threatening to sell the property another doctor upped the dose to 20 mgs which i have been taking ever since. Have had no problems with Amytriptilene unless I forget to take the daily dose. Then feel shaky until I take the next due dose. Other than that so far no problems touch wood! Not everything suits us all so a matter of trying it & see if it works! Hope that helps!

smithy52 Tue 07-Jan-25 16:34:30

my partner also experienced nightmares and ended up shouting and trying to lash out decided this could not go on and stopped taking them

Mt61 Tue 07-Jan-25 16:30:27

It was prescribed for bladder pain but was seeing black spots so stopped taking it.

missdeke Tue 07-Jan-25 16:28:23

My nephew was prescribed these for pain and he had a mini stroke!! Wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

Nagmad2016 Tue 07-Jan-25 16:25:33

I was given this by my GP to help with nerve pain following a severe bout of shingles, and costochondritis. The GP said that it would also help with my insomnia, and it did. He said it was very effective and had even taken it himself. I continued to take it for 2 months, until one night I was awoken by head banging Tinnitus. I have suffered from Tinnitus for years, but this was another level. Unfortunately, I stopped taking it immediately and suffered the consequences, severe headaches, heightened sensitivity to light, sound and movement. I am a Menieres sufferer so this may have been why I felt these effects, but it took me about 3 months to get the drug out of my system.

ReadyMeals Tue 07-Jan-25 16:21:03

Have you tried a mild antihistamine like Phenergan? (not the "non-drowsy" ones). Not as addictive as Amitryptyline. I sometimes go through phases of waking at night and not being able to go back to sleep for a couple of hours and the Phenergan makes it possible to go back to sleep easily with very little drowsiness in the morning. Also sometimes I suspect it's aches and pains waking me, and so some nights I take a paracetamol or ibuprofen before bed and that helps too

Cateq Tue 07-Jan-25 16:14:00

I’ve taken these tablets for years and haven’t had any issues with weight gain, blood pressure or dry eyes.

GrauntyHelen Tue 07-Jan-25 16:07:42

I took it for a while and it worked for sleep but made me produce breast milk
