Help! It's haunting me!

Hello grans and grandads alike, I need help, please.

First off, if you believe in such things, oh thank goodness. But, if you don't, well I hope it never happens to you!

I don't consider myself any different than anyone around me, well, I'm a bit cookie but aren't we all, sometimes?!

A little while before Christmas I had a sudden rash of visits, to put it the only way I can.
I'm not an empath, medium or anything like that, at least I'm sure I'm not although I have had visits in the past. Until the run up to Christmas I'd only ever had one that scared me badly, and that was a few years ago.

Anyway, I sometimes have a cat that jumps on my bed, pads around and then settles. I've never seen it, but I feel it's presence. It's only been in this house, which I've lived in for 5 years. The cat was the only visitor here, until this one that is, quite frankly, scaring the heck out of me!!

Suddenly, it...he, I think it's a he, appeared! I swear I am awake, but I suppose I could be dreaming. I feel awake, though!!

He came into my room and at first I thought it was the cat, but I've never actually heard the cat walking in. I heard it/him walk in then I felt the bed behind me going down as he laid himself down, just as a partner would if they were coming to bed late, but I suddenly just knew it wasn't good!
It took me a while to muster up the courage to turn over and look behind me,. I half turned, just enough to see who it was, sort of hoping it was just my housemate sleepwalking or sitting there for a moment to see if I was awake, unfortunately it was not my housemate!!

I saw this frail, little body wearing a blue & white striped vest type t-shirt, dirty and dishevelled. The body was so thin I could have counted the ribs. The head seemed a bit too big for the body, pale greyish-white in skin tone, with hair that in remembering later, to try to describe to my DD, I could only describe as looking like Gollum from Lord of The Rings ----sh't, my front light has just dimmed to almost off, thank God there's a light behind me, too!!!
I think Gollum is so cute, but the visitor is NOT!!

I felt, more than saw, that it was grinning. It was faced away from me, thank God as I think I'd have screamed the house down!
It left me soon after, quite suddenly and I spent the rest of that night sitting up in bed with my lamp on.

The next night I was alone all night, it didn't visit. Until about 3 nights after the first visit. Pretty much the same happened, except that I saw it's face, it's eyes looking at me, a stupid grin on it's face. I closed my eyes tightly, willing it away!

I slept with my light on for a few nights afterwards. It visited again before Christmas, on the other side of my bed, and I found my voice that night and screamed out for my housemate, who didn't come running but admitted next day he thought he had heard something but didnt hear it again so he went back to sleep! Then nothing until last night (Monday night). I heard my door open, letting in some light, I heard the patter of small feet like a child coming in to tell me they weren't feeling well - I'm sure you've all heard those over the years.
It got in behind me, I kept still but I started saying, "I know you're not real, you're not really here. Leave me alone, just go away!" As I said the last bit I felt it getting out of my bed, and I slightly relaxed. But, it walked around the bed until it got to where my face was and it bent down to me and it bloody well went, "Ssh-sssh!" Like you would to a little child - even though I had my eyes screwed shut so I wouldn't see it's face, it somehow seemed a bit humorous - then it stood up and went right around to the other side and got back into my bed!
Momentary humour over I started praying to God and trying to remember The Lords Prayer, and I felt it leave. It didn't seem to like the praying!
But it worked.
Soon afterwards, I got up. My housemate is ill and was getting up, so I got up, too.
Oh, I forgot, just before the shushing I'd attempted to shout for my housemate again. Thankfully, he (housemate) knows me well enough to know I don't joke about such things!

I'm not normally a religious or praying person, but I'm actually scared to go to bed so I'm downstairs on my sofa right now, my body feeling like it's covered in goosebumps!
The light suddenly dimming started those off and hopefully it's just that the bulb needs changing!

Please help me, what can I do to make sure it/he doesn't come back??

I'm so sorry for the long rant.

I think I have posted this before. My DD house had a ghost but a benevolent one. It sang to the baby and rocked the cot and the dog could see it , The dog sent a ball to it and waited for it to return the ball.

We have friends who had a benevolent ghost who came to look after new babies.

I would say if you're frightened or it is upsetting you, then ask a priest to come and bless your house, particularly that person.
It might not need an exorcism, just a blessing.

I had a regular ghost visit me for years. My story was featured in Fate and Fortune magazine last January. You just need to tell it in no uncertain terms to go away and leave you alone. Confronting it works for me. I’ve seen many things over the years but I’m not as scared anymore because I know I can tell them to go away.

what a great story!!! I was trying to read the article but it was so tiny, I must find out if I can enlarge it somehow

I truly believe that good triumphs over bad, if that is any consolation to anyone who is scared...

If you are a believer just saw out loud, 'In the name of Jesus Christ- be gone!' It works for me when I have these impy visitors but also sleep paralysis is very common, as is thinking you are awake when you aren't. Sleep deprivation can also induce this state so check all these out first.

Sleep well.

I don't believe in ghosts but I am willing to admit that all sorts of things are possible. However, my daughter suffers from something called hypnopompic hallucinations, it's an awful thing. Its when she's asleep and then is woken up suddenly she sees things - initially when she was young it was lights, then faces, developed into seeing figures and now its got to children, which is the worst I think. The reason why I thought of you Ali08 is that the children are very close to her face and rushing towards her. I've read that hypnopomic hallucinations do appear to be moving towards you quickly.

Anyway, that doesn't explain everything you've outlined here, but just wanted to flag it up. This condition is not the same as night terrors or sleep paralysis but you can have all these conditions at the same time (!!) There's an "opposite" condition called hypnogogic hallucinations that occur as you start to fall asleep.

www.sleepfoundation.org/how-sleep-works/hypnopompic-hallucinations

Scroll down a bit it talks about having the feeling that someone is in the room with you too.

Agreed! A friend of mine- not one to ‘imagine’ things had a visitor. She was worried as her then small children were upstairs sleeping, which is where the visitor was .
She got a local clergyman in to ‘exorcise’ the visitor. They heard running footsteps along the hallway, and then nothing. It was assumed that the visitor had jumped out of the window at the end of the hall.
There were no more visits after the clergyman’s visit.

It must be very frightening for you OP but I do believe it’s sleep paralysis. I have experienced this quite a few times and the sensation of someone/thing getting onto the bed is a typical symptom. When it happens to me the person always puts their arm around me and I lie there terrified but I know it will pass. I also can’t move.

Your experience sounds somewhat different so it would be a good idea to try and move. If you can’t it’s sleep paralysis, if you can then try some of the methods mentioned.

Good luck flowers

When we were renovating our present home which was basically a building site. I was talking to the man who was repairing the chimneys I was facing a window and this round thing appeared it was a combination of purples and blues. It moved across the window and out of sight What was weird was that I let out a startled sound and the man totally ignored me as if nothing had happened. He knew the house and I believe it was distant family so I did wonder if it was not an unusual happening. But have never seen anything since.

Ali08 Thu 16-Jan-25 18:51:07

Hello, everyone. Thank you for your replies.
As I was able to move - turn to look over my shoulder and saw his/it's face - I don't think it's sleep paralysis.
I was able to shout out, although croakily at first, but I do have voice problems so I had to push to get a good shout out!
Last night, well actually late afternoon as I had resisted going to bed the previous night, I said The Lords Prayer out loud and told the visitor that they weren't welcome here and they were to go away, not that it made sleep any better as I kept waking up. But I wasn't visited.
Hopefully it'll be the same tonight!
Someone said they didn't believe in such things because they were Atheist. Lol, I'm Atheist!! I don't think it matters whether you believe in heaven or hell or gods or not, if they choose you to visit, then you get visited!!
I do actually know someone who does smudgings, and if it carries on I might ask her for help, but I don't want good spirits to feel they have to leave if they're happy here!
As for new things in the house, oh boy!! Well, that could be a few things as it started not long before Christmas and we were all Christmas shopping but, as I thought more about it, I had my eyes fixed last year. I had cataracts removed and 2 new corneas put in, and we know where they come from - thank you to all who carry donor cards or have told their families and doctors that they are donating after death!!
My logic tells me it can't hurt me physically, but it can scare the heck out of me.
And then there's the bit that is still making me chuckle. The patter of little feet (they sound like little feet) as it got out of bed and came around to face me, bent down and told me to "Sh-shh" before pattering back to the other side and getting back into bed!
Like, what the heck?!

Anyway, if anything more happens I'll let you all know.
Be safe, everyone. xx

DeeDe Thu 16-Jan-25 19:32:07

Sounds like to do with your sleep, see Dr first explaining your experience, especially as alarming
although I have had unexplained experiences one I saw a arch of light at the end of the bed, a booming voice more in my ear told me not to give up on a baby we were bringing in from abroad and to look at her left hand, we were thinking of giving up as taking so long, was fostering her until we could adopt her in our country had never seen her only her passport photo, eventually she had home office clearance and she arrived on way home from airport we saw it a birth mark across her left hand it’s still there today she’s now 39 years old ..so I do believe there is more than this world as we know it ..

boheminan Thu 16-Jan-25 19:58:55

Wow! a suspense filled ghost story. What churns me up most is that this 'visitor' thing is actually sharing a bed with you...or have I misunderstood that bit? and you can hear the patter of tiny feet as it moves around?

I've heard a lot of tales about ghosts and have had dealings with quite a few but I've never heard about any that can physically move sheets to climb into bed with someone.

I don't think any self respecting good spirit will be happy sharing your house with this creepy little fellow.

Luminance Thu 16-Jan-25 20:14:59

It is sleep paralysis with hallucinations. A more common affliction than you would think.

SporeRB Thu 16-Jan-25 21:34:50

I think you should go back to the hospital that did your corneal eye transplants and informed them that you are experiencing visual hallucinations.

Also mentioned the dimming of the lights before it started, just in case they are any unforeseen problems with your eyes.

You may be suffering from hallucinations which can be a symptom of Dementia.
My late sister suffered from Charles Bonnet Syndrome which was extremely alarming and distressing
Visual hallucination refers to a perceptual experience in which a person sees images that are not actually present. These hallucinations can manifest as seeing people or animals, and may involve misinterpretations of what is being seen
Please seek medical help.

Dad use to see alligators or it could be barking dogs (he had Alzheimer’s), it would really frighten him, could that be what your late sister suffered from?

SilverFoxette75 Thu 16-Jan-25 22:55:29

I’d ask a priest to visit too and ask him to bless the house or better still, celebrate mass in it.

Madmeg Thu 16-Jan-25 23:22:33

I am, like many, not at all sure about these things. I watched Grace earlier this week and prior to giving evidence in a court room he swore on the bible, as had everyone before him. In the questioning that followed he was "accused" of being deluded cos he believed in contacting the dead and he accused his questioner of being unreasonable because if he were to be ridiculed for that belief then why insist that he swore on the bible. It was a fair point.

In my early teens I had a bunch of "new" friends (including an early boyfriend). One night someone suggested we try a seance with a ouija board, at my boyfriend's house. I barely knew these people. First of all we "called up a spirit" who wouldn't spell out any answers to us other than that he was male and had done bad things in life. The glass swung madly backwards and forwards on the table before finally "throwing itself" onto the floor where it smashed. We tried again and called up a lady who spelt out that she had been murdered in that house. Yeah, right?

Most of us accused the others of pushing the glass around deliberately and making it spell out the answers they wanted. So we "tested it out" by asking the spirit personal questions that we knew no-one in the room would know the answers to - and we were all stunned that "she" got them right.

It might seem noddy, but I never forgot that evening and having been brought up a Roman Catholic I ought not to have been surprised that spirits could exist. Communication between the living and the dead was not something the Church agreed with. Why not, I wonder?

Over my 73 years I have met a lot of people who have had peculiar experiences with the after-life in different ways and still wonder if it could possibly be real.

ELLAMAR Fri 17-Jan-25 02:46:21

Something weird has happened to me on and off for about 5 years. I have lived in my house for over 20 years but for some reason this started about 5 years ago but not all of the time and worse in one bedroom. I felt awake during the night felt someone touch me on different occasions and even said a limerick in my ear it was an older woman. Other times it was an old woman and then a male but I could never see them. I know it's called sleep paralysis I changed rooms and it happened a few times then stopped. I had never heard of this before but was watching a documentary years later and it was about someone going through the same thing. People were talking about visits from an old hag and feeling like they could not move. I can understand it not being real but how do so many people experience the same thing as I had never heard of the old hag before. The limerick whispered in my ear in a half singing voice sounded like it rhymed it still freaks me out now i wonder why it faded off when I changed rooms also.

MickyD Fri 17-Jan-25 10:17:05

Whilst I fully believe in ghosts/spirits/paranormal experiences etc (I have experienced a few) extreme stress/worry can cause hallucinations so if you are going through a tough time this could be a possibility. But check with a GP to rule out the onset of schizophrenia or other such issues.
What helped me when I had an experience of a dark hooded entity vibrating and merging with my body was to say in my head (my lips couldn’t move and no sound could come out) ‘dear god, dear Jesus please get this evil being out of my house’. It slowly retreated. The next morning my husband sprinkled holy water around the area. It hasn’t been back.

Witzend Fri 17-Jan-25 10:18:05

How horrible, OP! I’d be getting a local vicar in ASAP!

A friend’s sister had a similar (but less scary) experience. She and her dh had bought a house that had seemed very cheap - owners evidently wanting a quick sale.

Her dh used to depart for work very early, while she was still in bed. And not long after they moved in, she became aware of ‘someone’ (who she couldn’t see, but felt) sitting on the end of the bed.
She felt sure that it was a ‘he’, and gradually ‘he’ came closer. She didn’t feel that ‘he’ was malevolent or harmful, but obviously didn’t like it!

Eventually they called in a medium, who said his name was Albert, and he was an old soldier. She asked him to leave, and evidently he did, since there were no more early morning ‘visits’.

Homestead62 Fri 17-Jan-25 11:28:13

If this type of thing continues could you ask your minister or a Roman Catholic priest to come and bless your home? It may help. The other thing is just to keep saying The Lord's Prayer, in times of stress, worry or fear I find it can help but I realise not everyone is religious. If whomever is visiting is not harming you, you could always ask in an ordinary way if they would please cease the visits. From what you say they seem to wander about but don't seem to wish to harm you.

MamguL Fri 17-Jan-25 13:26:00

There is a protective prayer Psalm 91 that a lot of people say each night before sleeping e.g. www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0Rj32210JA
You can sing it e.g. www.youtube.com/watch?v=67wC6-kWWSo&list=RDQMAblI7BznvW8&start_radio=1
Or maybe leave it playing on loop while you sleep e.g. www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbFBhGQdorY

Hi Ali ,

Some of sense things and some of don't

As a child , I was frightened by a cold presence in our house .
She used to lurk on the stairs .
We called her June .
It was the name of the young teenager ,
who died in the house apparently from starvation and tuberculosis .

My father never sensed her , but my grandmother, mother and I did .
We had two pets : a cat and a dog and sometimes both of them would be plainly disturbed .
By the time , I was 15 ( her age when she died ) she seemed to be present a great deal
and always around me .
.
And then , she stopped visiting us .

Since then , I've sensed and seen things in other houses .
My sense is seeing things is more developed .
I've learned not to be afraid and upset about it .

If this is really disturbing you - please confide in a Priest or Vicar whether you are a believer or not .
They will help you .
