Help! It's haunting me!

Hello grans and grandads alike, I need help, please.

First off, if you believe in such things, oh thank goodness. But, if you don't, well I hope it never happens to you!

I don't consider myself any different than anyone around me, well, I'm a bit cookie but aren't we all, sometimes?!

A little while before Christmas I had a sudden rash of visits, to put it the only way I can.
I'm not an empath, medium or anything like that, at least I'm sure I'm not although I have had visits in the past. Until the run up to Christmas I'd only ever had one that scared me badly, and that was a few years ago.

Anyway, I sometimes have a cat that jumps on my bed, pads around and then settles. I've never seen it, but I feel it's presence. It's only been in this house, which I've lived in for 5 years. The cat was the only visitor here, until this one that is, quite frankly, scaring the heck out of me!!

Suddenly, it...he, I think it's a he, appeared! I swear I am awake, but I suppose I could be dreaming. I feel awake, though!!

He came into my room and at first I thought it was the cat, but I've never actually heard the cat walking in. I heard it/him walk in then I felt the bed behind me going down as he laid himself down, just as a partner would if they were coming to bed late, but I suddenly just knew it wasn't good!
It took me a while to muster up the courage to turn over and look behind me,. I half turned, just enough to see who it was, sort of hoping it was just my housemate sleepwalking or sitting there for a moment to see if I was awake, unfortunately it was not my housemate!!

I saw this frail, little body wearing a blue & white striped vest type t-shirt, dirty and dishevelled. The body was so thin I could have counted the ribs. The head seemed a bit too big for the body, pale greyish-white in skin tone, with hair that in remembering later, to try to describe to my DD, I could only describe as looking like Gollum from Lord of The Rings ----sh't, my front light has just dimmed to almost off, thank God there's a light behind me, too!!!
I think Gollum is so cute, but the visitor is NOT!!

I felt, more than saw, that it was grinning. It was faced away from me, thank God as I think I'd have screamed the house down!
It left me soon after, quite suddenly and I spent the rest of that night sitting up in bed with my lamp on.

The next night I was alone all night, it didn't visit. Until about 3 nights after the first visit. Pretty much the same happened, except that I saw it's face, it's eyes looking at me, a stupid grin on it's face. I closed my eyes tightly, willing it away!

I slept with my light on for a few nights afterwards. It visited again before Christmas, on the other side of my bed, and I found my voice that night and screamed out for my housemate, who didn't come running but admitted next day he thought he had heard something but didnt hear it again so he went back to sleep! Then nothing until last night (Monday night). I heard my door open, letting in some light, I heard the patter of small feet like a child coming in to tell me they weren't feeling well - I'm sure you've all heard those over the years.
It got in behind me, I kept still but I started saying, "I know you're not real, you're not really here. Leave me alone, just go away!" As I said the last bit I felt it getting out of my bed, and I slightly relaxed. But, it walked around the bed until it got to where my face was and it bent down to me and it bloody well went, "Ssh-sssh!" Like you would to a little child - even though I had my eyes screwed shut so I wouldn't see it's face, it somehow seemed a bit humorous - then it stood up and went right around to the other side and got back into my bed!
Momentary humour over I started praying to God and trying to remember The Lords Prayer, and I felt it leave. It didn't seem to like the praying!
But it worked.
Soon afterwards, I got up. My housemate is ill and was getting up, so I got up, too.
Oh, I forgot, just before the shushing I'd attempted to shout for my housemate again. Thankfully, he (housemate) knows me well enough to know I don't joke about such things!

I'm not normally a religious or praying person, but I'm actually scared to go to bed so I'm downstairs on my sofa right now, my body feeling like it's covered in goosebumps!
The light suddenly dimming started those off and hopefully it's just that the bulb needs changing!

Please help me, what can I do to make sure it/he doesn't come back??

I'm so sorry for the long rant.

Hi Ali08, I'm sorry to hear you're having to deal with these visitations. I do not think this is sleep paralysis, hallucination or even, God save us, dementia - all the kind of suggestion that gets trotted out by people who would rather do anything than believe there is a spirit world. Which I can tell you there definitely is. I have no idea where you live but in the first instance I would google your local dowsing group. These people are used to dealing with subtle energies and some are very skilled. If there is no-one who can immediately help, someone in the organisation should know a good psychic who can come and sort this out for you. Meanwhile smudge, shower yourself in your mind's eye with white light and imagine a globe of light protecting you. Ask any benevolent spirits you believe in to protect you. Not that these spirits can harm you, but you clearly feel frightened. You may well have psychic gifts, which you can learn to control and focus. Good luck. Be blessed.

We had a young man coming down our stairs in the day who disappears before he reaches the end when we first moved into our house. He's not scary and after many years now I've not seen him since, though I've heard footsteps occasionally. I've been made aware that he used to live with his parents in the house but died when in his late teens - which fits the scenario.
When I was small I was in my nan's house bathing my doll in the bathroom on my own and something gave me a hug. I told my nan who said it was an old family member of hers [I cant remember who]
In our own home when I was young I used to smell lavender a lot and my mother said it was an aunt of hers.
Needless to say my grandmother and my mother were very aware of the various visitations and I think I've got a bit of it too but luckily they're not scary but part of our home.

It is in your head not in your bed.
Night paralysis is the probable answer.

I am a sceptic but happy to be proved wrong about the after life, the thing that worries me is that if people come back as ghosts why do they behave in such weird ways. If I came back as a ghost I wouldn’t want to just keep walking through the same wall or sit on the end of someone’s bed scaring the socks off them, I’d probably want to do something fun.

crazyH Thu 16-Jan-25 00:32:58

This is a wry interesting thread.
I believe if there’s a life-after, there will be ghosts

crazyH Thu 16-Jan-25 00:31:34

Shiname - that’s certainly an ill-bred ghost. It takes all sorts, I suppose.

What a very common and ill-bred ghost!

Quite!

It sounds like you've been having sleep paralysis. I used to get many of these episodes, and like you was terrified of going to sleep. I still get them occasionally but I think understanding what they are seems to help in making them less frightening.

I had that once a few years ago, absolutely terrifying. Something was on my back clinging to me as I lay on my side in bed. I tried to reach for the lamp to hit it but I could not move. I remember calling out to my son like I say absolutely petrifying. (It did speak to me it said you sweaty c**t) In a man’s voice..🤦‍♀️

You may be suffering from hallucinations which can be a symptom of Dementia.
My late sister suffered from Charles Bonnet Syndrome which was extremely alarming and distressing
Visual hallucination refers to a perceptual experience in which a person sees images that are not actually present. These hallucinations can manifest as seeing people or animals, and may involve misinterpretations of what is being seen
Please seek medical help.

I've had the cat jumping on the bed experience from time to time, it feels so real. Both here & in my last house. Really interesting that it's quite common, & yes, it is just before I drop off to sleep.
You do have my sympathy, this sounds terrifying, after reading all the posts I suppose I'd be in the fugue camp; a really vivid trick of the mind on the border between awake & asleep.
I do think there are things that can't be explained in any rational way, but I don't think modern life suits them - or maybe we're too busy to pay attention.

Esmay Wed 15-Jan-25 19:15:38

You could be having episodes of waking from a nightmares or paralysis.
Either way, it's very frightening.
Are you stressed ?
Maybe you need an appointment with your GP .
Try herbal sedatives after gentle exercises and a warm drink of milk and honey .
If you really think that there is something supernatural in your house -
go and speak to a Vicar or Priest .
You don't have to be a member of their church .
If they aren't understanding or supportive -try another church .
I do think that there are unquiet spirits and that some people are aware of them .

A while ago I took Kalms over the counter anti anxiety tabs with Valerian, was under a lot of stress at the time and thought they might help. They didn’t really help and I started to get really vivid scary dreams in which I thought I was awake, in the dreams I would see aliens coming to experiment on me, injecting stuff into me that would explode if I didn’t do what they instructed.
I had this dream several times and started to read about alien visitations, reading stories that sounded like what I had been through.
Then out of curiosity I read about the side effects of valerian and discovered that vivid dreams could be caused by taking this.
I stopped taking it and hey presto the alien visitations stopped.
Would look at your meds and read the possible side effects.

Next time it happened again, try wiggling your toes and fingers. If you can wiggle them, then you know for sure that you are not experiencing sleep paralysis and hallucinations.

In the past, I have sensed a malevolent presence in my house but never saw an apparition, thank God.
Started praying at that time and it eventually left.

My mum said when Spoon the family dog died (us kids had just left home) she was on her own, that night she heard Spoon pad round the bed & then flop down & sigh, like he always did when dad was on nights. She never heard him again.

I would ask the local minister/vicar to come and get rid of what ever it is, good or bad you don’t want it there.

henetha Wed 15-Jan-25 11:50:05

"There are more thing in heaven and earth, Horatio...."
For several months now I keep seeing a dark shadow moving about the house. It's quite persistent. I keep seeing it out of the corner of my eye, but when I look properly it's not there.
I'm convinced it's the dark reaper coming to get me, as I am very old now.
I hope you can solve this, Ali08. I had an aged aunt that always opened the back door at night and shooed the bad spirits out, then opened the front door to let the good spirits in. Maybe you could try just shooing the bad spirits out of the back door.

Cabowich
I’ve seen the ghost of a cat, and it was a cat I knew.
I saw the figure of my then boyfriend’s dead father.
Just yesterday we had our visitor again in the charity shop where I work.
There was only the 3 workers in the shop when a book went flying off the shelf. I had a word with it Re we have enough to do without it causing a mess 😂
Our manager often sees a dog.

Granmarderby10 Wed 15-Jan-25 11:15:15

I think that asleep-awake state is known as fugue
Stress is the most likely cause. I remember once aged about 12 or 13 running down our stairs, turned around at the bottom and looked up to see myself standing at the top!

Nano14 Wed 15-Jan-25 11:04:54

Grandmabatty Wed 15-Jan-25 10:57:29

I think you have been suffering from sleep paralysis. I've had it once and it felt like someone horrible had taken hold of my hand and was pulling me. I heard laughter too. I'm not negating your experience, but I doubt it's a ghost. It is a horrible thing to feel so I do sympathise

Cabowich Wed 15-Jan-25 10:53:28

I've had exactly the same experience of a cat jumping up on my bed in the middle of the night, padding round and round, and finally settling.

I got up to go to the loo, but my bedroom door was closed so a cat couldn't have got in. I switched the light on and looked on the bed - no cat!

Told my mum about it the next day (I was a teenager at the time) and she said it was because of stress (taking exams).

It felt incredibly real and I still remember it to this day.

Redhead56 Wed 15-Jan-25 10:46:30

I had something similar years ago lack of sleep I told my doctor about my visitors he assured me it was stress I was having a difficult time. I was terrified of going to bed but I had young children to look after I eventually got over it. I was going through a nasty divorce with my then abusive husband who frightened the life out of me.
Some years later when extremely stressed about my mums illness again I had a return of the difficult nights. I learned to live with it because I believed what my doctor had told me. I have had stress since because of worrying about family. I had a few nights disturbances but again reassured myself it will pass.
You could try the recommendation about the sleeping tablet or try herbal tea. I hope you settle down for good night undisturbed sleep eventually.

Oreo Wed 15-Jan-25 10:16:21

You’re in a dreaming state OP and it’s more common than you would suppose. You’re somewhere between normal dreaming and awake. The feeling of a weight on you or a weight like someone getting into or sitting on the bed with you is typical of that.
Go back to bed and try taking a Sleepeze tablet from Boots half an hour before you get into bed for a deeper sleep.

Oopsadaisy1 Wed 15-Jan-25 07:19:15

PS you can do a smudging ritual, Google it, it might help.
