Fire in electric oven

Has anyone ever had one, and what caused it, please.
A friends oven had thick grey billowing smoke coming out the first time she used it after a clean.
The act of opening the oven sparked a fire snd the fire brigade had to be called.
She lives in block of flats.
Thank you

No idea sorry but I do remember years and years ago on a hospital ward I was working on someone didn’t follow the instructions on an oven cleaning product and when they opened the oven door they were admitted to hospital with some lung damage. I think it was a product you leave on for half an hour or so to give the even a deep clean.

Sounds as though she didn’t clean the product off of the oven properly.

Thank you both for taking the time to respond.
A close relative rented out their flat.
On taking back the apartment it looked like the oven had been cleaned though as there was some white residue in the corners, around the seal etc.
Unfortunately on putting small item in the oven it quickly became apparent there was a major problem. As I said, billowing thick grey smoke followed by fire
They had lined one of the oven grill trays with foil and wondered if that could have caused it but that’s what they always have done in the past ( so do I) so I doubt if it could have been that.
Thanks for reading.

I had some baking parchment catch fire in mine, a few months ago.
The oven had been on for a few hours, and at a high temperature.
I was shocked at the time.
Had no idea it could do that.
I have had the electric oven for about 20 years prior to that and never had a previous problem.

I dont know if that is of any help to you.

Thanks, fancythat.
The oven was completely blackened inside after the fire.
However, it’s had it….
Engineer said ( without prompting at all) that it was the chemical clean that had done the damage and they could still see where the products had been and not rinsed / washed properly afterwards.
I just wondered if anyone else had had a similar experience.
Thank you for responding.

So had she cleaned the oven herself?
Or used a professional oven cleaner?
Lesson learned either way, what a horrible experience 😳
