Recommendations for the the West Country

If you want something different, but still in Devon, head from Plymouth up to Exeter on the A38 then take the A3052 into East Devon. Lots of coastal places, stretching as far as Lyme Regis just into Dorset. Then going home, head back to Taunton to join the M5.

Dartmouth is absolutely lovely. A bustling little town with interesting shops, cafes and super pubs. A castle, lovely coastal walks andGreenways, Agatha Christie's house now owned by the National Trust, is a short ferry ride away.

As well as trips on the steam train from Kingswear which is just a ferry ride across the river.

A trip to Bigbury on Sea and have a look at Burgh Island and the hotel (art deco, and was where Agatha Christie wrote some of her books). I would love to stay here but very expensive. Or lunch at the Pilchard Inn on the island.
Salcombe is a beautiful place and this time of year not too busy.

Last time we tried to go in the Pilchard Inn we were not allowed as we were not staying at the hotel nor we were any longer local residents!

Oh no, my brother used to live not far from Bigbury and we often called in for a drink or lunch. That’s a shame, I know you can’t go into the hotel unless staying at the hotel, maybe I will one day.

Do check, this was a few years ago now so things may have changed.

I remember going for morning coffee in the hotel many years ago before it was banned to non-residents when a new owner took over.

Yes, we've spent many happy days round there; one of our first dates was in the Tom Crocker Inn 😁 with my DB and SisIL. I had chicken in the basket, very popular in the 1960s!

I love South Hams area of Devon, Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Salcombe is beautiful, an absolute nightmare to park though. I love the sound of Bigbury , I've never been also would like to visit her house given I've read all her books, many years ago.

Yes, the Jurassic Coast is interesting, especially if you like fossil hunting.
