What kind of stupid callous person steals a baby wombat from its mother?

All over the news last night the attention seeking Samantha Strable posted, now removed, videos of her laughing as she takes a baby wombat from its mum causing both great distress and then leaves it in the road. She has now fled Australia. How can someone be so crass insensitive and stupid? She has a bad record as well including killing a deer with a knife in New Zealand and other hunting sprees in her home US.

There are uncharming and downright cruel individuala as we all know. Howevever this is not the problem with the incident of the woman and the baby wombat.

There is a culture of hunting as a worthy activity, and it's this culture that frightens us because it's based on glorifying power over those weaker than oneself.

She’s vile. I would add that under the Wildlife Act 2004 hunting with dogs is illegal. However, fox hunting happens daily in this country as does badger baiting. Hunts claim to be trail hunting but it’s a lie. Thanks to drone footage this is being disputed and yet nothing is being done to stop them. Like her, they’re vile psychopaths who think the law doesn’t apply to them.

Hunting with dogs is illegal, but it's perfectly legal to use up to two dogs to 'flush out' deer and other mammals and birds in order to shoot them.

So a group of 'people' can still pursue these wild animals with two dogs and drive them (often for hours) until they decide to shoot them.

They still de-bark dogs too in the USA ("problem" barkers) which I don't think has ever been acceptable in most countries.

Without wishing to condemn a whole section of the world, I think a lot of Americans have a very different attitude towards animals than we do. When I am on animal forums, it is noticeable that they are far more likely to use adverse methods of behavioural correction.

And? Yes, they still declaw cats and mutilate dogs' ears and tails. Barbaric.

But certainly does not excuse taking a baby from the mother is the wild for a stupid video stunt to make money. NO!

I wasn't making an excuse for this woman at all, it was just a statement of how I've found their attitude to animals which I really don't understand. I don't think of my pets as fur babies but I certainly give them the respect they deserve as sentient beings.
I think what she did was absolutely despicable and I wouldn't like to think what I would do to anybody who declawed a cat or other mutilations if I met them up a dark alley.

Ilovedogs22 I meant would she come forward and tell them where the incident happened so they can go and help the poor creatures.
God forbid she should ever be anywhere actually near animals again. She must be a psychopath.

Not just stupid but cruel. She needs educating - my grandma would have used a horsewhip.

Allira Fri 14-Mar-25 17:38:32

Ooh, yes, we could suggest she steals a dingo puppy and runs off dangling it as it cries for its mother.

Thanks for posting Wombat Rescue's comments Allira.

I wonder if the despicable woman will help them? I imagine not.

We don't want the stupid idiot going near anymore animals Churchview!
Unless of course it's a great big angry dingo! 🤔

I should like to make clear that last comment was mine and mine alone, it was nothing to do with Wombat Rescue.

Yes Allira! I absolutely hope she gets something!
What a stupid, ignorant, fame -hungry, vacuous fool!
I haven't felt so angry in ages after watching her deplorable anttics.
Lock her up with a few dingoes, that will teach to mess about with wild animals for the sake of silly, ruddy social media likes! 🤔

The woman from Wombat Rescue was on the Today Show in Australia.
One American posted on FB:
As if we Americans didn't have enough trouble at the moment.

Someone else commented that the incident had been reported in an English newspaper and that the comments indicated people were livid here too.

Labradora Fri 14-Mar-25 16:49:25

I know nothing about this person.
Is she mad??
Only madness would excuse doing such a horrible thing and even then, only just.
People who say they prefer animals to people get a hard time, but it makes you think.

What a wonderful idea !!!
Make her face a Saltie..........
On the other hand if she ever gets to the Pearly Gates let's hope that there's a huge Wombat in charge.......

Good points David. If deer do need to be culled then it seems much more compassionate and human to dispatch them cleanly with a rifle than chase them over open country with dogs for hours at a time.

I still object to the dressing up, socialisng and tally hoing whilst doing it. It's glorying in the cruelty.

I'll post it again without my own comment underneath.

This saga is far from over.
Something I would like to say to Sam and her Australian friend….
That baby wombat has mange. You can see it clearly when she held them up to the camera.
As a matter of urgency (and showing your humanity).. we need the location of where this happened.
I don’t believe mum and bub have necessarily found each other. Why was it not filmed and showed?
We need to do a welfare check and make sure that baby isn’t wandering alone out there. But more critically we need to get both mum and bub mange treatment.
Without this treatment they will die. It’s as simple as that.

It would have served her right if the creature had messed on her and given her a nasty bite! I know these animals are protected but that does'nt mean they cannot carry diseases.......how is it a good idea to handle them in such an irresponsible manner?? Bloody moron needs banning from travelling anywhere beyond her own country.

And the person who filmed her is equally as irresponsble too!!

Put her in a cell for the foreseeable, work for her keep, she needs a mental institution but i think they are all closed..

I hope mother and baby were reunited. A disgraceful and cruel thing to do. I would love to see her try it with a crocodile next time.

I think she took it back to the mother but that doesn’t excuse her stupid and heartless behaviour. 😡

No, she dumped it at the side of the road.

I was worried in case the Mum could smell human scent on her baby and abandon it. I sincerely hope not.
Sarnia that worried me too.

The cameraman should be named and shamed too. Who is he? 🤬

I'd never heard of her before and hope I never hear of her again.

ViceVersa In England it's illegal to hunt with a pack of dogs but there is a legal loophole which makes it perfectly legal to 'flush out' deer with up to two dogs and shoot them. Apparently in the SW England there are several hunting packs who do this three or four times a week.

I've just had a look and I think this loophole applies in Scotland too. I'm no expert, so I could be wrong. (I hope I am).

Actually, I think you may well be correct about that loophole - and it's high time that was stopped too.

The SW has a big problem with Deer numbers they are doing a lot of damage, not to mention road accidents, they have to be culled to keep numbers down.
A local wildlife group have a woodland that was home to a small group of fallow but was damaging the trees, Forestry Commission shot them.

I don't think its a loophole but a considered plan to manage numbers, see link below.

I hope that stupid woman looses all her followers now.
