I know I’ve a molar that needs to come out, I'm worried about stopping my Apixaban and healing/bleeding afterwards.
Anyone else been through this please?
Thanks

I was on Apixaban and was just told not to take the morning one. I used to take one night and morning. (I am now on Edoxaban)

As I stated earlier SuperTrinny of course.

Different blood thinners and different procedures have different protocols for stopping and starting.

Just ask the health professional who is undertaking the procedure. They have the national guidelines to hand and are used to providing this advice.

I’m on Rivaoxaban and I’ve just had an extraction and implant without stopping my meds. It was fine, very little bleeding and no pain.

Unfortunately had to have two teeth removed whilst on Apixaban, the guidance from my dentist, is that to continue with medication, the possible consequences of stopping it are more serious. Minimal bleed following extractions, even without adrenaline.

Stopped my Apoxiban this morning. Was told to stop it two days before procedure. Not dental but having pacemaker replaced with biventricular one on Tuesday. There may be a lot of bleeding but the cardiologists know what they're doing.

Your dentist will advise. Not teeth but I had abdominal surgery last year, no apixiban for 24 hours pre surgery. All was well

My Dentist confidentiality told me no problem with being on Apixaban as I was due a back tooth replacement filling. He nicked my gum and it took 90 mins for it to stop bleeding so he could continue the job.
Next time I'm going to stop it for at least 24hrs.

Yes, DH's wasn't a pre booked appointment. Just a ln on the spot decision to remove it there and then, even though he had taken his pill a few hours earlier.
No problems.

I take apixiban and had an extraction without stopping it at all. I had a toothache for a while, not excruciating but uncomfortable. My dentist gave me an X-ray and said there was nothing wrong with it so I went to another dentist who took a photo with a special high resolution camera which showed up a crack which doesn’t appear in an X-ray apparently. Anyway he said he could pull it out immediately which he did which was a first for me. It hardly bled at all and I’ve had no problems at all. It was the last molar on the bottom so I haven’t missed it.

If your dentist is any good, he/she will be quite familiar with your situation and will be able to advise accordingly.

My husband had an extraction a couple of weeks ago and he just stopped his apixiban the day before . The dentist wrote the instructions down for us so it was very clear . No problem at all.

Similar around 6 months ago. The dentist got my GP approval to stop a similar medication 2 days before, and after the extraction. No problems with bleeding ir healing - just make sure you follow the advice of the dentist, for after the extraction , to the letter. Good luck.

i take warfarin and a few weeks ago asked at the anticoagulant clinic about stopping for dental work. I was told the danger of a clot from stopping the drug was worse than the possible bleed so they no longer recommend stopping it.

Jaxjacky Sun 04-May-25 15:08:35

Reassuring, I’m on 2.5mg twice a day, usually 9am and pm.

DH paid £280 at dentist last week. 😲

My husband had a low platelet count which caused more bleeding, and he had his tooth extractions done at the hospital. Apart from being safer, it was free!

Discuss this with your dentist and with your GP or whoever put you on blood thinners. There are such a lot of people on blood thinners these days, that they must be aware of the problem.

I cannot advise, as I have the opposite problem, being unable to process Vitamin K properly, so I bleed too much!

Your dentist will be very knowledgeable about your condition. They are highly trained in all aspects of their profession.

I’m on Apixaban for life. I have a clotting disorder and suffered pulmonary embolism after a long haul flight - so I understand your concerns!

I’ve had a couple of operations and a few procedures - was instructed for all of them to stop Apixaban from two days before, then resume the day after the op. I was as concerned as you are at first, now it’s just a matter of course. You’ll be fine!

It's always best to check with the professionals rather than online forums. We're all different and only they will know your medical history. Forums such as this, although lovely and well meaning, can only give you personal experience, not an informed, professional opinion.

Good luck with the extraction. 🙂

If you go to the anticoagulation clinic on a regular basis for your INR This needs to be within certain parameters which your dentist will require. The nurse will be able to tell you what level of medication to take to attain the level required.

My husband was on 2 blood thinners and the dentist forwarded him to a dental hospital ( turned out to be just a unit - nothing special). In fact , although he stopped the med. for one morning there were no problems.

Hi Jacjacky. I recently had an extraction and forgot to tell the dentist I had been out on Clopidogrel. Fortunately it all went OK and it is now listed on his records! I did have to stop taking it for several days prior to an operation last month and nothing happened while I was off the medication. Hopefully all OK for you now?

Jaxjacky Sun 04-May-25 14:07:43

Thanks all, I’m seeing my dentist Wednesday for a check up, we will discuss it then, I am grateful for your experiences.
