Tradesmen and bathrooms

I don't have a lot of luck with tradesmen. Since I moved here a year ago, those that have eventually turned up have broken my hoover and a long handled dustpan and brush, stained my (brand new) carpet, knocked the end off a newly fitted worktop - you name it, they've done it.

Last week and yesterday I had two tradesmen in - one to do a small job, the other to give me a quote. They both asked if they could use the loo. OK, you can't deny anyone that. I've shown them where it is and pointedly told them (I actually pointed out to one of them with my hand) that there's a hand towel next to the basin. Both times I've gone in after they've gone and both times the hand towel is in exactly the same position and bone dry and the basin is bone dry as well. So clearly they haven't washed their hands.

Quite apart from basic hygiene, my son has MS (he doesn't live with me but he does visit) so I am extra scrupulous as he simply cannot afford to pick up any virus.

I'm not sure how else I can tactfully tell people I don't know to wash their hands after they used the toilet.

Suggestions welcome!

Well, If I used this loo, would probably find handtowel unused. I rarely actually dry my hands after washing, just let them get air-dried.

I thought this thread would be about tradesmen fitting bathrooms!

So did I! Now I wish I had never clicked on it...!

On reflection I think you are right Calendargirl !
Catherine would have been put on the spot by the request and probably just handed it over feeling a bit bemused at the request.

Yes I bet it was binned immediately!

I thought Catherine did allow Meghan to borrow the lip gloss, but was obviously not keen!

I bet she chucked it away afterwards.

Most people don’t wash their hands properly anyway, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

NotSpaghetti Fri 20-Jun-25 00:39:41

...or even trades women!

I remember the story about how Meghan Markle shocked Catherine soon after they met by asking to borrow her lipstick 😮
The cheek of the woman.

Apparently she was most offended when Catherine quite rightly said no.

I often don’t wash my hands in public lavatories as I have to touch a door handle to leave, I carry sanitiser and use this once I have exited.

If there are paper towels, I take one and use it to open the exit door, then dispose of it in a bin.

(This is after washing my hands, would always do that even if I then had to touch the handle. If no paper towels, would use my coat sleeve or glove).

Actually I didn't "check".

It just so happened that on both occasions I was crossing my legs by the time they went and rushed to the bathroom. It was when I went to turn the tap on that I noticed the basin was bone dry and the (clean) hand towel hadn't been used.

But regardless of that, I'm not interested in having people in my home who can't follow basic hygiene practices.

Good for your Bluebelle if you're happy to have stranger's germs jumping around your home - who had quite possibly handled their genitals before handling your door handles and anything else they might touch - then bully for you. I'm not.

The posters son doesn’t live in her house I m sure she’ll have a good clean before he visits but thanks for your advice on how to speak Win

Oh for goodness sake I would never even think of checking if someone washed their hands after using my loo I ve never checked if that happens or not

I expect you would if you had ason who were as vulnerable as the OP's son is.
Less of the for Goodness sake please

Yes I am guilty of wiping freshly washed hands on clothing if nothing decent available. I might have a piece of loo paper as well to take worst of water and also to used when opening the door to exit.

I always wash my hands well, several times a day and always after loo trips. I usually do the full Covid-washing advice. However I don’t always dry my hands in a public wash room, especially if there are no paper towels. Surely those air dryers just spray the bugs around or give them a warm, damp breeding ground.

unfortunately I find many women in public toilets don't wash their hands either. You think Covid would have changed that but not the case

hugshelp Thu 19-Jun-25 16:38:40

Of course you can use the loo, but I must insist on handwashing for everyone who does so, due to my son's health condition. Sorry to be a stickler. Would you like a brew?

Ladyleftfieldlover Thu 19-Jun-25 16:09:28

An old friend had a sign above the loo in her house which read: ‘Now Wash Your Hands’.

A friend had a decorater in all day while he went to work. When he got home and went to the bathroom, the toilet and floor were so liberally splashed with the guy's urine, you'd think he'd aimed from a few feet away!

My friend, who is pretty fastidious about cleanliness, will certainly never have that guy back again!

All you can do, ferry, is explain that it is very important in your home that people remember to wash their hands after using the toilet or blowing their nose, as your son has a health issue that makes even a common cold dangerous for him.

Mt61 Thu 19-Jun-25 14:28:03

What is it with trades men & breaking dust pans? Our kitchen guy broke ours by standing on it.

Sharr22 Thu 19-Jun-25 13:56:17

Tradesmen have broke my loo flusher, broke a roof tile, carpet sweeper, dust pan & brush!
There's probably more but I can't remember.
The best was a guy posting leaflets who knocked and asked to use the loo. It was winter time, and I was alone. Directed him to my outside loo, which is perfectly serviceable. Thought nothing of it and went out a few days later to find a big frozen, unflushable jobbie! Had to wait for the thaw to flush it. I've been wary ever since

This is why I hate being given a drink (any drink but usually coffee in a cafe) and the server passes the cup to you with their fingers covering the rim of the cup (even though said cup has a perfectly good handle) so germs are all around the rim of cup which is the part going into my mouth !

Their fingers could have been anywhere, up their nose, in their ear, in their mouth, in their hair, up their bum for all I know but no, can't possibly pass me a cup and use the handle.

I refuse to accept them

A workman who came to fix our Smart Meter broke the lock in our downstairs loo. I wonder what Angela Rippon would say!
