Birthday Present Dilemma

My youngest grandson is coming up to his 5th birthday. My problem is I can't think of a present to get him . He really does have everything. Any grans/grandads got any ideas on what gift I could get him ? I can't take him out due to my poor health and I don't see much of him sadly. Ideas appreciated.

Hi , art stuff is usually a good shout colouring crayons / pencils books , art stuff.. or if you find out he likes something pay for a day out with mum to his favourite place .

That’s exactly what I do, a premium bond with something to unwrap for the younger ones, the older ones ( there are nine of them) get a Premium bond and money in a card to spend on what they want, three of the children have already had wins of £50 each over the last few years

I recommend a deceptively simple puzzle game called Genius Square obtainable from the Happy Puzzle Company. We bought it for the grandchildren , but the whole family enjoys it and the kids still play it 6 years later. Costs about £20.

I bought two sets ( for two kids) and that turned out be be even more fun because a child and granny can race each other. Or, one person can play it alone . It's won countless awards.

How about a subscription to a monthly magazine like the one called Whizz! Pop! Bang ! which is about science with tons of fun things to do or make

Anneeba Yes, The National Geographic Kids magazines are great, that way he gets a present each month!

Manon2. What is the matter with you?? You really are showing your true character now. You have been snippy before but never this rude and unkind.
I think you should take a good look at yourself before you turn into a bitter and twisted old woman!

The cost of a driving lesson, every birthday and Christmas until he is 18!

My two 5 year old grandchildren love their National Geographic Little Kids subscription (7 year old has N G Kids one too). They get so excited every month when it comes through the letter box with their name on it.

mabon2, why so sneery.

Yes, and rude!

For a five year old the world is his oyster...I would suggest sourcing a really good and good-quality dressing up outfit such as a pirate or knight's outfit, head to toe and with room to grow. Will also come in handy for World Book Day, Halloween, whatever. If you are crafty, you could personalise it in some way.

Ask his PARENTS, - SIMPLE AND RELLY A FIRST WORLD PROBLEM.

No need to 'shout' ... the only daft question is the one you don't ask!

How about a visit to Smyths? My DGS chose a football, a spiderman costume and an action figure at that age. Basketball and hoop last year and Earpods this( He is 11 now).

Or books - not something a 5yr old boy really wants, but colourful picture ones with his favourite characters did work until he was 10

Larsonsmum Sat 12-Jul-25 15:23:10

mabon2 - what a horrible SHOUTING response. Very glad almost all others are being understanding & helpful.

You can never have too much duplo when you’re a 5 year old boy . Get a set to make something interesting and it can also be added to what he already has . Also I found magnaform tiles sort of magnetic triangular shapes still used aged 10 from age 4 and you can get a truck or something in it - can be added to. My daughter in law Asked for it for her boys .

two of my grandsons absolutely loved Okido magazine - it is about science, nature, the arts and design and they learn a lot but do not really notice they are learning because they enjoy it to much! Stories too. It is aimed at young children.

My Grandson is 5 now ,
And for his 4th birthday I bought him some of the Disire delux magnetic building blocks construction toy set ,
He liked them so much that his Mum said he would like some more for his 5th birthday ,
This time I bought the glow in the dark ones ,
You can buy the basic sets , but you can add to them so they can build bigger things ,
They do them in different makes .

There's some great bath stuff about! Fizzy coloured tablet potions, bath putty, wind up toys that go underwater a special hooded towel etc

Graunty7 Sat 12-Jul-25 14:24:05

Love this one swing ball or similar

RillaofIngleside Sat 12-Jul-25 14:22:48

I agree about Wicked Uncle. Always something different.
My grandsons also love Lego, but it does feel as if I'm adding to a pile of plastic!
Be careful with books, as a former primary teacher I would say classics like Alice and Wind in the Willows are much too old for a 5 year old.
Alternatively, a trip to the theatre or a day at a wildlife park is nice although expensive.

Fabulous ideas here . Love the sticker book and sticky slugs idea
