More times than I can count. Beautiful country.
Like any big city there are bad people.
Always wear your body bag in the front of you. Be careful on public transport ie, if you feel you are being crowded, you are, get away quick.
If your driving make sure you stick to the speed limit your licence will be taken from you there and then.
If you’re driving into Romania make sure you buy your vignette at the border.
If your relative can make it to Transylvania it’s stunning. We owned a holiday rental there.

My neighbour lived in Romania for a couple of years but that was about 15 years ago. They lived in a remote village and as soon as they arrived a big Roma woman turned up and said she would be cooking for them. My neighbour said they could manage but the woman would not leave and insisted she would cook.

My neighbour was too scared to argue. The woman asked for money to buy food and disappeared. She turned up next day with a ghastly kind of stew with big blobs of fat floating in it. My neighbour realised she was being ripped off but kept quiet.

I have a family member (a UK national) who used to work in Romania and although he is now retired, he and his wife regularly visit friends there, as recently as 6 months ago. They love the country and say it is beautiful.

If I had paid attention to FO advice, I'd never have been to Egypt in 2013 ... we had a fantastic holiday and felt completely safe. smile

Perhaps try the Foreign Office or the Romanian Embassy
