What sliced bread makes decent toast?

I always buy worthy bread, seeded and whole meal, but I suddenly had a whim for the toast of my childhood, white of course, and always crunchy. I’ve bought a Jackson’s white sliced bread and the resulting toast was very disappointing, I then bought a Jason white sourdough loaf which I’ve just had with a dippy egg and didn’t like that either. It was just too, well, sour. I don’t really want to have to slice bread for breakfast. Any recommendations appreciated

I make my own bread, I have done for 50 years, the last 25 years I have used a bread machine. Either for a full loaf or dough for bread rolls/teacakes.
I can’t stand the taste of shop bread.
Have a go, if I can make it anyone can.

I agree Tiger bread is the best for toast.

We used to use Hovis but lately it has seemed different and not as nice. We now buy Tesco oat and barley bread. It makes lovely sandwiches and is great toasted as well. I’m going to try Norah’s easy loaf recipe.

Yes, that Tesco oat loaf is really nice. However we don't have a Tesco nearby and they don't seem to sell it for online orders. I buy a soft wholemeal thick sliced toastie loaf, from M&S or one of the other supermarkets.
I can't eat wheat myself so a loaf may last a few days and I store it in one of the fruit and veg drawers in the fridge where it keeps well and is fine for toasting.

Check out the ingredients on the back of a packet of sliced bread - not a good read. More than 5 ingredients, I wouldn’t buy it.
Homemade is best 3 ingredients - simple, delicious - batch bake and freeze.

I just had a delicious sourdough toasted sandwich for dinner. It doesn’t get better than that for me!

Wholemeal is'nt always healthy for everyone, I can't eat it, too heavy and flabby.

i'm a fan of tesco's oat and barley bread too. i have a slight wheat intolerance and this doesn't aggravate it and i can't eat seeded bread as the seeds go under my plate!
i use it toasted and for sandwiches and find that a loaf lasts for ages not going stale or mouldy.

Bazza, I know you said you didn't want to cut bread, but...
I'm lazy but I like to know what's in my bread, so have invested in a bread maker. White, wholemeal or half and half, all seem to work well. It takes about three minutes to put flour, yeast, salt and water into the machine The bread is done in about four and a half hours with no more input from anyone. And you can time it to be ready for breakfast when you are. Always good.

Almost all supermarket bread has additives, improvers, preservatives etc
I make my own by the easy no kneed method. Some you can just simply mix and leave overnight . Waitrose used to have their own baked bread with no additives. Worth exploring their sliced white.

I bought a breadmaker and wouldn't be without it. The bread is without additives and has only flour, butter, yeast, water and a small amount of salt and sugar. It smells good, tastes even better, and costs under £1 for a medium loaf. Putting the ingredients into the pan and starting the process takes a few minutes. Toast is wonderful, with wholemeal or white bread. It also has a timer. Can you tell that I am a complete convert? smile

Sorry Romola - didn't see your post, which I have almost replicated.

I’ve just had a slice of Tiger Loaf, with lashings of butter. 🤤

I too am tired of toast. So, I'm trying buns, crumpets, muffins and hot cross buns

Aldi do a thick sliced tiger loaf which makes good toast. They also have various thick sliced malted and grained breads. All good.

Lovesbach, glad you agree about the bread maker. And I love and revere the great Johann Sebastian too

Apart from Aldi seeded / tiger bread I love Tescos Toastie in orange wrapper . I also toast cheese topped buns , fruit buns , panini and breakfast muffins , all to make a change . Oh , and can’t beat Aldi blackcurrant jam on toast , especially on Tescos toastie bread . 🍞

M&S sliced super seeded. Many of their sliced loves, white or brown or seeeded are excellent - and not hugely expensive.

I sometimes hastily read a thread, add a comment in the box, and then realise there are several pages that I haven't seen, and I am on page 1. Hence my happy breadmaking post! Perhaps heaven is listening to Bach and eating buttered toast. That will do for me. x

Ive had to go to white bread - no roughage. Have tried a lot and i find M&S white farmhouse - they do another too and they both make lovely toast like when I was a child.

FranP Thu 07-Aug-25 21:34:09

The bread of my childhood was a proper bakers bread - my father insisted. But I would go to school with my posh ham or cheese salad sandwiches , or my dinner money and swap it for Mary's "jelly piece" A flat steamed pan loaf spread with margarine and jam - I loved it!

Toast has to be white, unless it is from Costa. Hubby has Jacksons multigrain seeded and that is OK, but for me, it is Tesco cheapest own brand toastie, or even cheaper, Nevilles

Asda tiger bread makes excellent toast, especially since I can choose the thickness I cut. Jackson’s tiger loaf comes next.
