Aldi farmhouse seeded bread thick sliced. It smells delicious when toasting and tastes even better .

Hovis sliced seeded or whole meal sourdough

I like the Tesco thick sliced toastie, or the warburton toastie's good too

Thanks everyone who replied. I’ve never made bread Norah. Aren’t you supposed to knead it? Maybe I’ll give it a go. While we’re on the subject of bread, we used to enjoy Waitrose pave loaf, but now it’s more expensive, smaller and not nearly so nice so don’t bother anymore. As many food items are.

Warburtons bread contains palm oil. Can’t think that was around for my childhood. I agree with the pps who suggested to find a proper bakery.

Maybe try this easy bread.

5 g sugar
10 g yeast
240 ml hot water --- mix, allow to sit 10 minutes

500g flour
5g salt --- mix, allow to sit 1 hour (to double)

Form, let it double, bake at 200, 15-30 minutes by size of loaves.

Perhaps bake white bread. Easy, cheap, never disappoints.

Oreo

Sliced Tiger loaf, you can buy this already sliced thick cut, makes good toast or sandwiches.

Oh yes but only if slathered in butter 😁😁

If you want the best bread make your own. The next best choice is from a baker. Supermarket bread is tasteless.

Oreo

From Tesco and I think, Sainsbury.

Morrisons too.

Try Tiger bread.

Thank you for all your suggestions which I’ll work my way through! Monica, I’m sure that you’re right about the bread of our childhood. Also, we didn’t have a toaster in those days and it was often my job to watch it under the grill which I usually ended up burning. The sound of a knife scraping burnt toast reminds me of those times.

if you want the bread of your childhood, find a traditional baker who still makes bread the traditional way, with longer proving times and baking in an oven.

Supermarket bread is made with all kinds of extra additives which make the dough rise much more quickly. It is then cooked in a steam oven and, sometimes, if you are lucky 'finished' by a brief baking in a dry oven.

It is highly unlikely that any loaf bought in a supermarket is the bread you remember from childhood.

Jacksons white sliced or, even better, seeded white koaf.

I find sourdough toasted so hard it hurts my gums .
I don’t think you can beat Warburtons thick sliced for toasting .
When my GC stayed when they were young they always asked for Grans toast and still like it today.

I love Aldi Farmhouse multi seeded in a pink wrapper it is delicious.

Like you I usually always buy healthy wholemeal bread. However, when on a babysitting sleepover I had some half and half bread toasted and it was delicious! Try that?

Oreo Wed 06-Aug-25 09:02:50

From Tesco and I think, Sainsbury.

I always buy worthy bread, seeded and whole meal, but I suddenly had a whim for the toast of my childhood, white of course, and always crunchy. I’ve bought a Jackson’s white sliced bread and the resulting toast was very disappointing, I then bought a Jason white sourdough loaf which I’ve just had with a dippy egg and didn’t like that either. It was just too, well, sour. I don’t really want to have to slice bread for breakfast. Any recommendations appreciated
