When were you advised to get post op bloods following surgery?

I have been on injections for years. You will feel better 😊
But, there’s every possible that the 3 monthly injection won’t be enough.
I was luck that my Dr accepted that and put me on by monthly.
But, when I had to change Doctors the nurses really pushed for me to go back to 3 monthly.
I still have my x monthly. 😉

After my TH R which was when Covid restrictions were still in place although coming to an end, I never once saw a HP of any sort.
The Surgeon rang me after 6 weeks, asked how I was and discharged me from his care.
Likewise with the Physio, one phone call and discharged, I just assume my GP practice knew I had had it done but from start to finish I saw no one but the Surgery Physio who visits the surgery two days a week.
He arranged x-rays, referred me to an Orthopaedic Surgeon and that was that
I just accept that is what happens now.

i feel very strongly that us patients are not being INFORMED AND THEN TOLD we should have been more pro-active
and CONDESCENDING by some NHS professionals suggesting i should ask GOOGLE to search which proteins i should be eating to increase my B12 ,,what .VERY OFFENSIVE .even a few weeks/months delay can impact our health

Usually the need for post-op bloods would depend on how bloods taken in hospital looked - if you had post-op anaemia, then they would recommend follow-up bloods once discharged.
If your bloods were absolutely nornal post-op in hospital, then they wouldn't ask the GP to check them after a week.
If that makes sense?

It was the PT who recommended post op bloods.. not after a week after surgery but at around 12 wks… just wondering what the norm is as definitely feel progress has gone backwards not forwards due to lack of energy ..
was not told of pre surgery blood levels or if I was a bleeder during op.. you just don’t know and maybe it’s just NHS protocols ..

I wasn't, although I was found to be anaemic in hospital.

I have had both knees replaced and never had post op bloods taken. It used to be routine but not these days.

I wasn't found to be anaemic pre surgery @assessment ...but apparently levels can drop significantly post surgery and as was aching from shoulders to shoes, and ranting about groin pain..still not sure why...that I was actually listened to by a Physician's Assistant (PA) who i wasn't best pleased about as wanted to see an GP, But, she did arrange the blood work and follow up with a locum GP who stated i was severely deficient in B12. folate and serum...so 'no oil in the engine..'

The injections do sting a little as they have to go in slowly on alternate shoulders..second one later today ..phew its hot...

I do have my haemoglobin levels checked every few months but only once did the GP do a fuller check and that didn't include B12.

No post blood tests for me after 2 TKRs and a HR. Just a phone call from the surgeon and that was that.

I've had both Hips and a Knee replaced. There is no reason to have a routine blood test.
I unfortunately during one Hip replacement, the surgeon broke my femur causing significant blood loss, they gave me a transfusion to bring my Hb up. Didn't need anything else Hb came back to normal quickly, before I was routinely discharged.
However, If you are now having B12 injections, thankfully it showed up on your bloods, your GP will needed to recheck every now and then.

Re blood loss during surgery...I've wondered this and will ask @my 6 mth check up next month...

The B12 injections do sting bit and the first one that I had on Monday has left a nasty bruise and ached all night
am supposed to have injection 3 on this arm tomorrow...yesterday, i had injection 2 and the nurse commented on the bruising and asked who administered it and i stated a student nurse with registered nurse in room..she's put a note on my record..so not happy to have injection on this arm with bruising still sensitive but supposed to as its alternate arms...i shall have to request they put it in arm that had injection yesterday which shows no bruising and did not ache in bed at all...always something...
