I just rang my vet a momemt ago . They use a service called Pets to Go, and I now have that phone number. Thanks again.

Taking dog to the vet in a dog emergency when my sons and daughter in law can't attend. Oh dear! I'd have to ask for a taxi driver who is not averse to dogs. Next question:is there such a thing as a hirable dog ambulance?

Caleo I am sure they would. Maybe all the more reason for an account with a friendly local firm who you would get to know.
Wondering ( please ignore of this is too personal) what situation you envisage where you would need a taxi?

Caleo Would your children be able to take you somewhere to shop, so that you could experience cashless shopping using your card. That way you would understand how it works.

I have just written on another thread that essentially selfless parents produce selfish children. In this case your selfless and deeply caring children are depriving you of some of the basic skills you might need in an emergency.

That is the crux of it MOnica: an emergency might arise.

I can't go shopping as I am too frail. I cannot stay on my feet for more than about six minutes. I wonder if a taxi driver would help me in and out of their car with a walking frame.

I had to learn how to tap my card . Don't laugh but took me ages to realise I had to wait for the beep to know my card had been approved. I do use self service if only got couple of items but I always use card even if it's under £5 as I found putting the money in I missed the slot with my shaky hands. But I do argue with the machine if it tells me I have done something wrong . 🤣

I have shopped on line from Sainsbury's since 2003 as they started delivery service no longer after my husband was terminal. But with covid shopped on line more.

Our local taxi companies all accept cash……I think it’s a way of ensuring that the drivers get a tip but I could be wrong. They also have a card reader which I’ve never needed to use although if it were necessary I’d still give the driver a couple of quid……seems mean not to.

Caleo do you mean I don't go out because I do at 2-3 times a week . Or do you mean you ? If it's you do you have a trusted family member or friend you can give your bank card to and go to an ATM for you .

When I have been to ill to go out my daughter gets the cash for me . She hasn't always used my card but her own but I have my banks app on my phone and pay her back via it immediately.

I pay for my sit fit class,move it or lose it class and my gardener by direct transfer using the app. Forgot I pay my window cleaner by cash .

I only have maximum of £200 in my home once I get down to my last £20 get another £200.

I use my card when out mostly if it's under £5 use cash. I can't always get my card out of my purse and tap it as my hands shake so much. But the assistant at the till does it for me . I would never ask them to put in my number. So I have to get a tight grip on my finger to hit the buttons . Assistants have taken cash out of my purse for me and put back any change .

The TFM told me no need for me to have cash in the house as he can get whatever I need, including transport. I will have to ask him again. He does not quite understand my need to retain some independence.

I always pay taxi driver with cash. There machines don't always work. I am disabled and need the driver to put my legs in and out of the car. So I always give them a couple of pounds extra. They always carry my shopping to my door and if it's raining ask me to open my door so they can put my in bags .

If it's not a sensitive question, how does one get a stash of cash from the bank or cash point (if there still are cash points) if one never goes out?

I’m always surprised by the number of people who swallow the old line of “I prefer cash as the bank takes so much off in card charges” . Since Covid , card charges are very small. Many businesses prefer cash because it’s tax free !
Cash can make them victims of crime too ……..

I do think most people would be pretty unlikely to try to use cheques these days.

I'm in London. If I take a taxi - which is rare - I always pay cash.

I think you mentioned that you didn’t go shopping. Is it as simple as that?

Not really. If I were really interested I'd have asked the Grans long ago. However not going shopping is the main reason for my ignorance. What I last went shopping was years ago and I was struggling to learn that new method where you do the check -out yourself.

Escorting a party of out- of- touch U3A out and about , paying people without using cheques etc may be an idea for some public -spirited Gran who is fit enough to be the group leader!

Rosieandhermaw it's not the surprise element of Mabon's comment that bothers me it's the rude way in which she addresses the OP. Not for the first time I might add.

If you are simply looking at local use, why not open an account with a mini cab firm. We have an excellent one locally with all lady drivers which some people find reassuring.

I suggest that Mabon reads my post earlier and learns something that might prevent her/him from being so critical.

As for the suggestions about Uber, never ever seen one in my country town or any nearby. If you need a taxi here you need to book it well in advance from a private local firm. There are no taxi ranks at local stations waiting for three passengers to alight, none of whom want a taxi.

In Bristol and Sheffield, where my two DDs live, Ubers are everywhere.

Also, a bit of advice to the OP - use your new-found skill of paying by card cos the world is getting to be more and more automated, and in a very short time cards will be "old hat" and something else will become the norm.

I think you do need to use the PIN the first time the card is used?

I would phone taxi company and ask what they take. Ours do all including online prior to journey
