supermarket OWN frozen vegetables

At the end of the day, i doubt whether the major supermarkets grow their own vegetables for freezing. Some only work with elected producers, but at the end of the day, a carrot is a carrot is a carrot. Peas certainly may vary in quality, but you pay higher prices for the better quality.

Frozen vegetables are as good nutritionally as fresh vegetaables, and often even higher because the vegetables are much fresher when they are frozen. It takes, even British grown vegetables several days, even up to a week, to get from cropping toappearing on supermarket shelves, while frozen eg are processed and frozen within 24 hours.

Thanks *JaxJacky.

Perhaps I'll try Ocado deliveries occasionally this winter, we were talking about getting deliveries perhaps once a month and topping up in between.

I love fresh veg, especially from our own garden, but frozen veg is so handy to have as a standby. I've never really found much of a difference between brand names and supermarkets' own brands, to be honest. Things like spinach, butternut squash, sweet potato etc are particularly useful for chucking into curries.
Oh, and Allira has just reminded me of those small onions. I haven't seen them for years - I used to use them in stews and things like Greek stifado.

I remember buying them in Tesco about three or four years ago but not since. Nor in Waitrose.

My Dad would sit and peel small onions to pickle - large jars of them! They were better than any I've ever bought.

I do pickle my own onions, but it's interesting to see that you can still buy the little pearl ones, as JaxJacky has posted. Not sure if we can get Ocado deliveries here though. I've never had groceries delivered.

I like frozen veg. They are harvested at the peak of freshness and frozen very quickly afterwards, They have been shown to keep more nutrients than tinned or even fresh. There is no wastage as vegetables are ready prepared for cooking and don't go off.
I always buy broccoli, sprouts, carrots and petit pois from Tesco and Waitrose do a lovely mix of cauli and broccoli florets, carrots and peas.

I buy Morrisons broad beans, petit pois from Aldi and DD gets me packs of diced celery, carrot and onion from Sainsbury’s which are very useful for shepherds pie, bolognese sauce and chicken soup.

I regularly buy Tesco broccoli and cauliflower mix and it’s great in a veggie fricasee. I have also used the mix with peas, carrots and peppers.

Taste is a personal thing, but there is plenty of evidence that frozen vegetables are full of vitamins, sometimes better than fresh.
Living alone, I find them very useful.

I don't have a microwave but recently bought a steamer. I buy the individual bags of frozen vegetables from Iceland and Birds Eye. So much better than fiddling about with a pan on top of the stove.

I buy either Waitrose or M&S frozen veg. We like French beans, Broadbeans, Spinach in particular.
With just the 2 of us this is more handy for us.

Squiffy Mon 01-Sept-25 14:34:35

We regularly buy Morrisons frozen broccoli and cauliflower mix and it’s very good.

I order, in fact have just done so, Tesco casserole vegetables, I’ve been using them for a few years, perfectly fine. Occasionally I buy their farmhouse mix, again, no problems.

Allira Mon 01-Sept-25 14:28:37

Chopped ginger is very useful.

Supermarkets used to do frozen tiny onions suitable for boeuf bourguignon but I haven't found any for some time now.

Allira Mon 01-Sept-25 14:25:58

I'm not keen on supermarkets' own frozen peas, or even M&S so buy Bird's Eye.

Otherwise they seem fine, we don't buy a lot of frozen vegetables but I like to keep some in in case there's a shortage.

If vegetables are on offer I may buy a few eg cauliflowers and blanch and freeze them myself.
At the moment I'm ploughing through runner beans from the garden, cutting up, blanching, freezing! Given some away too.

I must confess, I have not found any noticeable difference between frozen veg, no matter where you buy them.

I buy from Waitrose and Iceland because their shops are local, but I do not buy a lot of frozen begetables, mainly chopped onion, peas and sweetcorn.

Hello, does anyone order frozen vegetables regularly from an English supermarket and can recommend?
has anyone been disappointed or swapped supermarkets for better quality?

We do not shop with Asda as they are too far away

our locals deliveries are from Sainsbury, Waitrose,
Tesco, with a minimum charge of £50!

We have had frozen veg from all 4 and allowing for seasonal differences there are times when its disappointing, other times certain vegetables seem to be in short supply, mostly its ok, often lacklustre.
We always read reviews which are often conflicting.

We are nowhere near Lidl or Aldi, Morrisons or Iceland.

thank you ladies
