"Help given at school is tremendous"

Was the clue actually "Help given in class is tremendous"? If so, the word "assist" is hidden in the sentence. Just a thought.

Now that would make sense! I think the first time it was "in class" (and I really should have spotted the answer!) but the second was definitely "in School". Silly Compiler got the question wrong. Mind you, I have also come across clues before where the "correct" answer was misspelt or the wrong length.

I cant even see an a ..for assist ?

The good thing about the Guardian crosswords (in the paper) was that they always gave the name of the setter - so if I saw "Bunthorne", then I knew I'd have no chance of finishing it!

The Guardian has too many anagrams and French words for me these days.

I love the Guardian cryptic crossword and have a go at it every day. (I print it out - prefer that to doing it online) Some setters are easier than others. 'Vulcan', usually on a Monday is reasonably do-able but one or two others are REALLY hard! I like Paul best - he's the nearest to the much-missed Araucaria.

I enjoy the Times cryptic. Similar in difficulty to the Telegraph I think. I've never tried the Guardian.

For those wanting to try other puzzles, DO have a look at the Saga Puzzles (Google should reveal). Free, and several to try each day.

There's a couple of Sudokus (I hate!) - but also a Codeword (lovely, much better than paper & pen, you can erase mistakes in a jiffy!!), also a Crossword and a Quick Crossword (about my patience limit!).

As Nell says, there are several types of clue, in most Cryptic crosswords, and you get to know the style of the setter.

I used to work with someone who could do the Telegraph Cryptic in about 10 minutes, but only on some days. He didn't bother on some days, if he saw that the types of clue showed that another setter was responsible . . .and he couldn't fathom that chap at all?!

Well blow me, I just had a look at the puzzles at the top of Gransnet and they are the same ones i was going onto Mumsnet to do! I had no idea that we had puzzles on here. Thanks Aggie x

Exactly what I was going to suggest. A very easy clue, though.

It's better to stick at one that defeats you occasionally than move to one that's too easy, imho

Thank you. I've been on GN for years and didn't know we had a crossword!

I think one problem is not our ageing brains but clues where even if you get given the answer, you can't see how they got there!

"Help given at school is tremendous". How does one get Assist from that? Ok, Help/Assist but what about the rest of the clue? It's not helpful.
That clue has come up twice recently in the Metro offering.

Oregano Wed 03-Dec-25 17:52:39

There are some puzzles on Mumsnet, you don't have to join as I haven't. I do it every day! Also I think you can do the I newspaper one online as well.

There’s a crossword in puzzles , link at top of this page , probably too easy for you !

Nell82 Wed 03-Dec-25 15:26:10

Metro.co.uk has a quick crossword and a cryptic one

mumski Wed 03-Dec-25 13:44:26

Any suggestions?

mumski Tue 02-Dec-25 18:44:24

I do this online and used to enjoy it.
However, I find now I really struggle to complete it without lots of clues to help.
Could anyone suggest a slightly easier online crossword I can try?
Thank you
