Wellbeck my mother wouldn’t let me have a liberty bodice. Mid 1950s. She said they were common!

I'm still puzzled by the liberty bodice thing.
Sounds victorian.
Why would children dress like that??
Why not just wear a vest or T-shirt as underclothes in winter ?
My mother was born during first world war. Never heard tell of L B from her. Nor her sister.
?maybe it's a regional or class thing?
Seems strange I never heard of it in real life.

A liberty bodice was worn instead of a vest, I think. It was actually very comfortable and warm, with a fleecy feel. I wore one in the 1940s, when I was under twelve. It was absolutely no hardship.

Anyway. Back to never have...
Taken illegal drugs.
Nor wanted to.

The journey is the only worrying part StoneofDestiny . Bus and ferry in January. I'll let you know how I get on.

Grammaretto

What are you afraid of about the Souter Hebrides? Stunning places - but January could be a challenge weather wise, (and unlikely to get to St Kilda)

I wore a liberty bodice in the early 1950s.

Until the recent thread that featured liberty bodies I had never known anyone else who had worn one.
I've done several of the "naughty " things listed but I've never seen Star Wars.

Worn a liberty bodice.
Nor even heard of one till I came on here...
Still think it sounds like a contradiction in terms

Actually, it was called a libety bodice because it was made of flannel and was not stiffened in any way, thus giving the wearer a sense of freedom which was most definitely not a feature of the boned, pleated and cross-hatched corsets grown women wore when little girls were suddenly allowed liberty bodices instead of boned and tightly laced "stays".

I remember my elder sister having to wear one of these but I escaped. I don't know why.
I did however have to wear a light " corselette" when first I wore stockings , in order to hold them up.

HiPpyChick57 Tue 16-Dec-25 03:44:50

I have never smoked or driven a car.
At one time a lot of my friends smoked weed but having a hatred of cigarettes I had “dope” cakes or as they are called today edibles instead.
That was in my dark and distant past and I haven’t touched the stuff for decades.
I really wish that I had learned to drive though.
