Tip embarrassment to takeaway driver

If his hand was palm uppermost he was not really inviting a handshake was he?!?! No wonder he laughed 🤝🤣

Tipping is a minefield. I never get it right. It's a bit cheeky holding his hand out, serves him right.

We also still give the bin men and our postie (they’re all wonderful) a tip at Christmas. My OH says he’s sure that must be a custom that is dying out. Both are always so happy. The bin men gives it to the driver, hopefully it is pooled for a hot breakfast at the nearest café.

Don’t see any delivery drivers they just leave things on my door step or deliver somewhere completely different

They re paid to deliver your dinner that’s their job

When I was a little girl the dustman knocked on the door, which I answered, and said ‘tell your mum that the dustman said Happy Christmas’. I shouted out ‘ Mum the dustman says Happy Christmas’ and shut the door! I couldn’t understand why my mum laughed. I don’t think she would have tipped him anyway as she was always telling them off for dropping rubbish in the street.

Whenever we have a takeaway delivered they just hand it over and go so there doesn't seem to be an expectation of a tip.

i always tip deliveroo as i use it a lot for shopping and some takeaways, i add the £2 when paying the order. i don't tip for any other deliveries but my mum puts money in an envelope for the window cleaner and the postman at christmas, before people ask about deliveroo, i am disabled and it is a lot just to get out for bread and milk etc.

I had to laugh at this, I think if you offer seasonal greetings the delivery person might think you are tipping them. I don’t usually tip. Luckily you don’t live in the US where a failure to tip could be taken very badly.

I have never been to America but have read the stories of people being chased up the street and interrogated as to why they didn't tip, insults being written on the receipt etc.

I tip my ringtons man and window cleaner.

We had a takeaway delivered earlier, the driver was tipped, he was on time and it’s freezing out there.

This thread is an education! I’ve never had a food delivery so protocol wrt tipping has never crossed my mind. Where we lived previously, there were no deliveries because we were too remote, and I suppose I’ve just never got into the habit.

I’ve noticed that locally people have deliveries at breakfast time from MacDonalds and so on, which does baffle me a bit. How long does it take to boil a kettle for coffee and pour a bowl of cornflakes? Of maybe they’re having Big Macs for breakfast! Our local Costa now delivers coffees to your house, which I also find baffling. I assume they charge more than in their cafes?

I always give the bin men something at Christmas, they are undervalued in my opinion. The post seems to be delivered by a different person every day but I used to too when we had a regular postman/woman. The only food I have delivered is my Sainsbury's order but again I never see the same person twice so it seems odd to randomly tip one as he happens to be on that week.

Re my earlier post, I don’t order groceries etc. online for delivery - I’m referring to take away deliveries, which for us is an occasional curry.

Like you SueDonim I’m mystified when I see McDonald deliveries come to my neighbour at breakfast time. I definitely don’t understand having coffee delivered at home, that’s bonkers!

When my American cousin visits each Summer and we go out for meals, she embarrasses me by tipping 20% of the cost of the meal.

I tell her we don't do that here but she insists.

I tip a taxi driver and a hairdresser. I never see the postie or bin men.
The Christmas postie is usually a student who is only there a few weeks.
I do leave a tip 10% for a restaurant meal. Sometimes service is included.

I always tip the driver who delivers my Chinese take-away

I have in the past given a Xmas tip for the Bin man, but now there are so many, it’s a bit difficult

My son was one of these as a student and it can be miserable.

But I don't tip a lot. Just recognition...
And I don't have a take-away more than a few times a year anyway.

Most delivery services have a delivery charge, so I see no need to tip. Mostly they hand over the food and leave quickly, with no obvious expectation of a tip. We pay online so there is no need to hand over cash at the door. In the days when we used cash I would round up rather than tip. I find tipping awkward.
