Searching for Bel Paese soft Italian cheese this morning, right down a rabbit hole, available from Amazon of course, now I know it isn’t freely available I really want it.

Is there anything in particular anyone misses?

I remember my Grandma having a Terry’s of York casket,
the glamour! with wee drawers, layer of Langue de Chat before the good stuff underneath, violet creams, hazlenut swirls, butterscotch.
Callard and Bowser’s butterscotch wrapped separately in foil in a little box, I preferred to a tin of Sharp’s toffees, the dentist’s delight.

It has been a looong time but I still crave Huntley and Palmer’s Breakfast Biscuits, the factory in Reading long gone,
New Zealand red Cheddar cheese, nutty and delicious.

I loved fox’s Bran biscuits. Sad they were discontinued. Anyone know of similar ?
Crunchy, great with cheese but also good on their own. Not sweet, a little like an unsweetened digestive

Tunnock type marshmallow teacakes with jam in the middle are either Lees or Lyons.

Marks and Spencer used to have chocolate base cakes with a sort of marshmallow on top drizzled with Apricot jam, they were lovely, around in the 70's my mum's favourites.

Square polo mints, which still had a hole in them, and strathaven toffee which tasted of burned tablet. Lovely!

I would love to find some decent soft goat's cheese- the stuff I bought recently was all rind.

Aldi does a really nice rindless goats cheese.

I don't have one local to me but may make a special trip- thanks!

Could have been Lees they make a selection of confectionery, fudge and tablet and chocolate meringues and macaroon bars and tea cakes
The sweet things I miss are Aston Sandwich biscuits and Oddfellow sweets and I loved Danish salami and a white Danish cheese whose name escapes me but I think it began with an H.I do know I haven’t seen it since the late 70s

The only Danish cheese I know beginning with H is Harvati. I don't see it nearly as much nowadays, mostly in speciality cheese shops.

Hated Caramac but loved Reilly's Chocolate Toffee Rolls and Macaroon Bars.
This thread reminded me of the beautiful gift boxes for chocolates. Gorgeous cottages on the lid with a matching ribbon.

Oh Kunzel cakes with the chocolate shell!!
Loved those, such a treat.

Greenfinch Fri 09-Jan-26 22:11:52

Kunzel cakes. Indulgent chocolate cake.

I loved the soft pink and white nougat with nuts in it, can’t find it anywhere now, also nesquik chocolate powder to put in milk.
And cracker barrel cheese.

Tins of curried beans, they had sultanas in, could eat some now, cold.

I do remember those and they were delicious 😋

Another one now.
Birds Eye did tiny pearl onions frozen and the packet contained small squares of frozen cream sauce which melted and thickened as it cooked.
They were delicious and we always had them with gammon instead of parsley sauce.
It would be easy to replicate I suppose but the onions were really small and would take hours and lots of patience to peel.

Another vote for Caramac.
Sadly missed.

It reappeared briefly 2 or maybe 3 years ago. I bought some and was bitterly disappointed, it was vile. I suspect it was a recipe change but it may have been my tastes changing. I so wish I'd not seen it and just retained fond memories.

Spangles Old English flavour. There was one called Wintergreen, I think. I especially loved that one.

Instant Whip, which was not the same as Angel Delight.

Oooh Sharon103 I still dream of the lovely lime filling 😴-why did they take it away 😭

Granmarderby10 Fri 09-Jan-26 19:15:38

So I’m going to dive in with Meltis Turkish delight.
I always used to buy this at Christmas along with EatMe dates or was it figs -I always get them confused but love them both.

Meltis also make Newberry Fruits still but as Fancyflowers has posted above they are not the same, being individually wrapped in transparent cellophane although still superior compared to other jellies they have lost that luxurious liquid centre.
A Waitrose Turkish delight was chewy, not how I like it and had virtually no aroma of rose water, and Aldis’ own was soft but as well as tasteless it had a whiff of industrial oil type smell.
So the hunt is on because on googling it seems that producing Turkish Delight proved a challenge for Meltis so they stopped.
😢
Another disappointment at Christmas was marzipan fruits, not cheap but firstly they were only half a fruit (mean) and secondly they didn’t even taste of marzipan …just how do they achieve such poor quality?🤔 It makes me want to make my own.

Terry’s Spartan - all hard centres and the best dark chocolate; and the chocolate biscuits served in their York tea shop and available to buy there but nowhere else. Great memories!

My mum always used to give me some money to buy my dad a box of Spartan for Christmas. They were his favourites.

Cadburys milk tray chocolate bars with each flavour/type integrated into a bar of chocolate. It usually had my favourites in it too.

Oh yes. I remember buying those out of my pocket money. I used to love the lime piece.
