Which would you purchase? (light-hearted)

I have a dilemma: at the moment I'm hankering after 2 different things that I don't need, & never see in the shops so would have to get online. Both are small things & I could afford both, but I'm going to treat myself to one or the other,
First, a garlic roller-crusher (as mentioned on a thread on here recently). I got fed up with traditional garlic presses & years ago I saw one of these (John Lewis I think) but it seemed expensive & I didn't buy, I just chop garlic by hand it's quick & always fine enough (even if it does give me "garlic fingers)
Second, I have this amazing paintbrush, a Monarch advance, that made all the difference to the quality of my DIY painting when I got it about 24 years ago. I look after it, & it's still good, but I'm in the middle of a long slog of painting & I would like a second, just in case I forget to wash it thoroughly one day.
I'm going to go online & treat myself to one or the other - a paintbrush or a garlic crusher - which would you get?

Just looking through stuff, saw this and I wondered if you’d bought the garlic thing. I bought this joie one a while ago and it’s brilliant. Easy to snap shut and dice garlic, the garlic all ends up in the container, and it’s easy to clean. I’d definitely recommend this to chop garlic!

I am in the buy both category too.
You can afford it you say.

I "got over myself" in this area only a few months ago.
I think it was my upbringing that made me be careful all the time.
I decided recently that I do not miss £5 extra on something.
I also think[and back to the being careful again] that there could be trouble and strife big time in the world[much more than now].
Goods may disappear from shops.
Like you see in other countries, empty shelves, even of essentials.
All my opinion.

Buy both. Life’s too short.

LOUISA1523 Sat 31-Jan-26 07:20:18

Get both

Sarnia

Life is short, get both.

Definitely agree with this.

Push the boat out and get both.
I have bought a small har of minced garlic, I open froze it into portions after a couple of uses, in my case 4 meals size, as I freeze three. Cannot tell the difference from fresh.

I’ve got both and the press is better. Soften the garlic first in the microwave for a few seconds.

I have a garlic grater plate that came with a silicone tube and a little brush. You place your garlic cloves in the tube and roll it to and fro on the worktop the skin comes off as if by magic.
You can use it to grate ginger and hard cheese like parmesan too.

Try tkmaxx, or homesense for the garlic crusher

A lovely paintbrush is a thing of joy! Paintbrush everytime.

And the garlic rollers don't really work anyway....after years of using an excellent Zyliss garlic press, which takes whole cloves, skin and all, I now just squash them with the side of the knife blade.....but if anyone is tempted, here is a link.

Absolutely, Sarnia. As my father used to say, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think ( he did add " so throw the cat another goldfish", but perhaps that's a little un- PC these days)

crazyH I was just going to say buy garlic puree. I use it all the time and it's good value as it's strong, easy to spread on bread for garlic bread . Melts into food without any bits . Keeps in the fridge .Not garlicky fingers .

After it was mentioned here I bought the Garlic chopper from Amazon Germany (I live in Luxembourg) it was expensive €19,96 but I gritted my teeth and bought it.
It is brilliant. You can chop garlic as fine or course as you wish and it does, as it says on the packaging “rinse clean easily”
I am sure it can be found cheaper but watch out for cheap quality.

If you can afford both get both! No issue or use lazy garlic...simples

hamster58 Sat 24-Jan-26 19:20:39

I had one of the garlic presses-it takes a lot of strength to actually get what you want so eventually threw it away and went back to a garlic press. Some presses are better than others for cleaning. Would personally choose the extra paintbrush

JustAGodmother Sat 24-Jan-26 18:14:04

My own gran often commented there are no pockets in a shroud. Unless you can only afford one, of them just treat yourself. Life is too short not to have simple things that make it better.

I've got a garlic press. What's a roller and why is it better?

It's a silicone tube that you roll cloves of garlic in to remove the skin. You still have to crush them unless you're using them whole.

67notout Sat 24-Jan-26 15:53:47

They’re both so different and serve different purposes so I would definitely buy both. No hesitation. I love the sound of the paintbrush.

Nannan2 Sat 24-Jan-26 15:34:02

Grammaretto

Just looked them both up. Go for the paintbrush.

yes.

Baggs Sat 24-Jan-26 15:30:46

I had a garlic roller but I found cleaning it a faff (the skin seemed to stick inside) so reverted to peeling garlic and then just smashing it under a broad-bladed knife.
