Having been a teacher and worked with small children both here and abroad, I was quite used to all sorts of different words, or none at all , but for me the important thing was to know what a child would say when they needed to use the lavatory. Having mixed nationalities added to the problems sometimes and so I wanted parents to let me know what they said, but once you had larger groups of children it was much better when you could all have an expression that was easily understood by everyone, which avoided accidents and upsets. So it often ended up with something like "does anyone need the lavatory/toilet now?" and children were able to connect this to their own particular choice of words within their family. But that was for more general use rather than within a family I know.

If all your family use the same words it is easy to follow suit, but you do have a problem when each grandchild has their own words , so you have different things to remember for each one. I think if it was me I would make a note of each ones choice of words but maybe decide on whatever words seems natural and easy for you to use. Then you could use that word, explaining to each grandchild that you called it vagina or fanny or whatever and that it was the same thing as the word they used. That way with more than one grandchild you have your own word that they can use with you, and you wont get muddled.

One daughter called it ‘Minnie’ and here’s a funny story when my little grandaughter (well one of them) was out of nappies she had some pretty little Disney knickers with pictures of various characters on. One day her brother a couple of years older came to his mum and said Xxxxx has got her knickers on back to front ‘ her mum went to look and bless him she had them correct with the picture of Minnie (Mouse) on her bum ….but he thought the picture was to denote the area

Well if you want to be anatomically correct it’s not the vagina is it readerjb

When I was a kid we called it a ‘wee wee’ the part you did a wee out of.

DD is ‘darling daughter’ Grannywalker

Nowadays I always use the word ‘Fanny’ doesn't seem any more crude than any other nickname to me

What about bosoms I always call them boobs although I did have one boyfriend who called them ‘pinky and perky’

The vulva includes the mons pubis and other external areas GrannieWalker.

Ladyleftfieldlover Thu 12-Feb-26 06:26:10

We’ve always used the correct anatomical terms. Why not?

GrannieWalker Thu 12-Feb-26 06:17:04

Very interesting everybody, but we're not there yet for me, sorry.

For me, ... growing up in the 60s and 70s ... Fanny is a bit crude ??? Privates and Front Bottom a bit twee ??? Vagina and vulva anatomically inaccurate ??? Isn't it the mons that's actually visible for a little girl? ( interesting that 'mons' gets corrected by autocorrect!!!!!! Doesn't even recognise this important word! )
What does Lulu's DD mean? But I'm looking for something in common use. I'm still not sure I'm prepared for what grandchildren might use. I've been very daring and done more internet search about female private parts .... 'Twinkle' in common use? Do people think that's true? ... common use?

JamesandJon33 Thu 12-Feb-26 05:45:31

Fanny, or my DD says Lulu.

mum2three Thu 12-Feb-26 05:41:45

Private parts.

NotSpaghetti Thu 12-Feb-26 05:34:52

Vulva and vagina are the words we have always used for those parts of the female anatomy in our family.

But then we have always used "penis" rather than "willy" too.

Why are these particular parts of our body not "labeled" correctly?

And why do so many people on the radio/ in articles not seem to know the difference between a vulva and a vagina?
Using the "correct" terms seems to me to be sensible, and less confusing.

My eye is my eye and my elbow is an elbow after all.

Her vagina! Silly nicknames are problematic. You would never want your granddaughter to be molested, but give her the correct name.

Grammaretto Thu 12-Feb-26 05:13:04

Front bottom.

Mackir Thu 12-Feb-26 03:23:11

Privates

"Fanny"? That's probably biologically inaccurate - and a bit crude - but that's all that springs to mind.

What do Gran’s, parents, carers, everyone (in the UK) call a little girl’s equivalent of a little boy’s willy these days?
I’ve asked my three DSs and two DD-i-Ls but I think they all said different things, and whatever they said went in one ear, out the other and didn’t register.
I don’t know when it’s likely to come up with one of my grandchildren but I want to be ready. Is there a name used generally these days that is as well accepted as ‘willy’?
What is amazing me is I don’t have any recall of a name for such (I am being coy, aren’t I ?!?!) when I was a little girl, and neither do my friends!
