Non-purple shampoo for salt & pepper 'going grey' hair ?

My hair is at that horrid 'neither here nor there' stage of going grey. My hair looks like a light and dark hair-quilt.
I have tried the usual buy at the supermarket purple shampoo but to be honest , I looked ridiculous - it made it even worse.
Is it possible to buy a non-purple shampoo that stops the hair looking brassy ?

Are you sure you rinsed and rinsed again till there was no trace of purple. I do mine once a month or so and there is no purply look to it so rinse and rinse again. Good luck.

I use it every couple of weeks as it just tones it down, never looks overly purple. I think they have other shampoos that are also hint of other colours?
Might be worth having a chat with your hairdresser they might have an idea.

Purple shampoo shouldn't make your hair purple. What brand are you using?

Consult the professionals.

You will probably need the roots darkened with added highlights.
or
Go blonde with the pepper and salt colour bleached into a blend with the grey/white. Recommended.

Forgive my ignorance but what is purple shampoo?

I have a friend who sprays on a purple dye on her hair and its a lovely pale purple .

My hair is brown and silver natural and looking forward to it going all silver .. I use same shampoo I have done for decades and conditioner.

Purple shampoo is intended to tone down brassiness in blond or silver hair. It’s wash in wash out, my silver hair has two streaks remaining of my previous brown hair which the purple shampoo tones down I only use it monthly.

I use Fanola, recommended by my hairdresser, same tanith about once a month.

I've been using John Freida's purple shampoo and conditioner for my hair, several highlights brown to blonde merging with my grey. It makes a difference in keeping the lighter highlights from going slightly brassy. The shampoo is a remarkably vivid purple but that colour rinses out without a trace.

I sat in our spa bath with purple shampoo in my hair and afterwards there was a purple rim all round the edge because it stuck to the sides of the bath. I feel a bit apprehensive about the stuff and whether it is poisonous and bad for the environment. I won’t be using it again.

Phillip Kingsley is good, but as posters have said it must be washed out.

This is the one I tried.

I really did try to rinse and rinse but it even stained the towel (luckily and old one)
