Jewellery design/alteration

I've done this. I went to the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. Said what i wanted, they made it and I couldn't be happier. From old rings to a newly designed one, plus a necklace, with matching earrings!

Go to a craft jeweler not a High Street chain. There are jewelers who have a workshop where you can see them working. They should melt just your rings and not just include it in a general melt, giving you the equivalent weight.
Please do your research carefully if the actual rings are precious to you. There are some brilliant designers around.

I have recently had a ring made using diamonds and rubies from my mother and grandmother's old rings 9ct gold it cost £800

Had to replace my wedding ring as grew too small. Wouldn't have it melted to enlarge as engraved inside. DH bought me a new one. My DMs wedding ring was quite big and I now suspect it was enlarged due to the knarly finger problem when she was older. Passed her rings to my DD but when she died had them returned to me by her husband. Have passed them to my GD.

Depending where you are, there are still many jewellery craftspeople in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. My SIL when there to have a bespoke ring made from family jewellery and it is beautiful but I didn't ask how much it cost.

I recently took a silver ring into a jeweller to have it made smaller. My fingers are quite slim now as I’ve got older.

The cost to have this done was exorbitant.
Not worth it.

This was a useful ( and alarming) post to find , I had to have my wedding ring cut off when I broke my wrist recently . The hospital cheerfully told me I could easily have it remade !
Painful !!!

My sister and I are just doing this with Mum and Dad's wedding rings and some other rings Mum had that we wouldn't wear.
The 1st jewellers sent the rings off and some sketches to a workshop and we got some CAD drawings back and a quote of approx £3500 each ring which we thought was a bit too expensive as we were supplying all the gold needed from the wedding rings and the other dress rings and the stones to put in the rings, some little diamonds and sapphires
So we went to a little local jewellers who has his own workshop and is going to use the CAD drawings to print 3D rings to check the design and fit and then has quoted us £1200 - £1500 per ring - much more reasonable - so my suggestion is make sure you shop around and get more than 1 quote

I would like to do the same with some rings I have. Obviously style will determine price but I haven’t a clue what kind if figure we’re talking about. Can anyone help on this?

Thank you for the replies. The ring I had made was a mix of 18 and 22 ct and they said it would be classified as 18 now. My Mum's rings still wouldn't have fitted, I could just manage to fit them on the tip of my little finger they were that small. Wish I'd inherited her size too 😂

I have had all mine redesigned and had my mums wedding ring incorporated into my ring, however it's a mix of 18& 22 ct so can not be hallmarked but I don't really care. Plus my dad's big wide one I had it devided into x2 round wobbly circles which my sister and I wear on chains as necklaces.
Re design is worth every penny IMO.

Go chat to a number of craft jewellers. Their style can be very different so it depends what you like my Nana gave me a ring when I was a teenager I believe it was made from a couple of her diamond rings. I never wore it as it was too small I had it remade quite a while ago So far as the gold is concerned I think it will depend if the metal in the rings are compatible ie if it’s the same carot Don’t think it spelled like the vegetable

With hindsight, what a shame you had your mum's rings made into a bigger ring, they may have fitted you now 😐. As hands change so much with age (my hands are starting to go gnarly 😱) how about having all the gold rings made into a bangle with the stones set into it? Just a thought 🙂.
