We are planning a trip here and I have googled info, but wondered if any more local GNers could give me more precise info on best place to park and then get to the Viaduct. Hoping to go next week. Thank you.

One thing you could do is to park near a tram stop outside the city centre and then catch a tram into town and get off at Deansgate-Castlefield. I live in Manchester but we never drive into town so I don't know the car parks.

It very much depends which direction you're coming from Katey as Deansgate is a bit of a nightmare for cars since the cycle lanes have been introduced.

However, once you do get to Deansgate - with the entrance to the walk accessed via Deansgate metro stop - there are quite a few car parks within walking distance (the nearest being on Bridgewater Street just off Deansgate or the NCP opposite the Bridgewater Hall on Albion street) as well as on road parking (with meters) on Whitworth Street west and also nearby Liverpool road, with a couple of parking bays near the Oxnoble inn on Liverpool road.

If you're unfamiliar with the area, it's a great district to explore - Castlefields, Museum of Science & Industry, new Campfield market on a Saturday - plus very many yummy bakery/coffee shops/eateries all around Deansgate when you need to refuel after your walk.

Hope you have a fab day.

Good suggestion by Ilovecheese if you don't fancy city centre driving.

You're very welcome Katey. Although I'm not a Manc I love the city and my granddaughter works near the Museum of Science and Industry so I often drop her off there and know the area quite well.

Maybe give the Northern Quarter and Ancoats a go if you've not already. My rambler friend does a great canal walk from Piccadilly basin down through the gay village and emerging at the Bridgewater Hall or carrying on a bit further to Castlefields basin which is part of the original Bridgewater canal. Some great old pubs - the Peveril of the Peak, the Briton's Protection - near the Bridgewater Hall end too.

Manchester is my fave city cos I went to secondary school there (Moss Side for those of you who know it!). Imagine my delight when my youngest DD had her Hen Party there after living in Bristol for nearly 20 years. The groom was from the Wirral so his sister and friends could also come as well as her "new" Bristol friends. It was a fantastic weekend all round.

I hope you love it!

Google it…….there is loads of information on line.

But Google really doesn't have local knowledge. Nothing beats people who really know the area.

Thank you again all, we are putting the jaunt on hold for the time being and might just come in by train or do an overnight stay at a hotel close with parking, will research it all a bit more in the coming weeks. Lots of idea, I appreciate all your input.
