Granddaughter delaying period, advice please

Not wanting to put a spanner in the works, but oddly enough, my sister's friend has a granddaughter who 2 weeks ago, the day before her holiday and having taken a prescription drug to stop her period had a very serious blood clot in her leg. She was very ill in hospital. I have no idea of the name of the drug, neither do I know what the chances of this happening. All drugs have risks but after having just recently heard this, I think I would ask the question and or read the small print so you're aware of this potential risk. Even if it is small.

Macaydia. I love your faith in the medical profession sometimes asking around can be very helpful. Also are you aware of the high incidence of medical negligence. There can also be incidences when knowledge does not extend as far as needed. After an ultra sound my Gp dismissed a lump on my chest as fluid. Despite a previous aorta replacement. On further hospital investigation I underwent a nine hour op as the graft was badly infected

I don’t recognise the named medication but it was very common in my days to be prescribed pills which delayed periods.
Holidays exams hobeymoons etc I had them a number of times without a problem.

MT62 I thought one of the effects of endometriosis was the sufferer being highly unlikely to become pregnant.

I suffered from endometriosis and had two children.
Eventually I needed an hysterectomy plus other treatment.

My daughter did that decades ago with her doctors consent but only for a week. But she said she would never do it again as her period was worse than ever and cramps ,back ache and heavier bleeding . She's 43 this year.

MT62 my dear friend' daughter found her debilitating endometriosis didn't come back after her first baby.
She said it was like a miracle.

Obviously it's the minority that have a "reset" like this, but it does happen.

I used to be a regular blood donor and noticed that if I donated early in my cycle, my period would be delayed by about 2 weeks. When I realised that my period would be due around my wedding day, I decided to donate blood a couple of months beforehand. Sure enough, it disrupted my cycle and I had a period-free wedding and honeymoon!

For some girls periods really
are a curse,which they dread every month .

I'm sure that your granddaughter's GP has asked all the right questions when prescribing this drug to delay her period .

The contraindications are listed .

But please try to find out why she's suffering and get it treated.

Has she got endometriosis?

Years ago - I remember the miseries of a heavy flow,clotting and cramps when ballet exams were due.

I hope that those days are coming to an end .

My daughter, 26, has had awful heart and painful periods since age 14. She has a particular pill no which she takes every day and has no periods.

It’s with both the support of her GP and a gynaecologist we ended up seeing privately as the two she saw on the NHS actuality rolls to “just put up with it”

Harley Street scans showed she also had endometriosis.

I had a similar experiences with extremely heavy periods as did my poor DM.

I would imagine your DGD will be absolutely fine.

However, after her holiday I would be pushing for more tests. Too many girls and women are “fobbed off”

I would too ask to see a gynaecologist.
A young girl across from me in hospital was crying with relief when they diagnosed endometriosis. She said
her Gp had been ‘gaslighting’ her for four years saying there was nothing wrong with her.
(I could hear the conversation with her consultant).
It made me quietly weep, as my niece has the same condition & is now pregnant.
Later we had a chat & said I heard what was wrong & told her not to worry, told her about my niece.
I’ve heard that pregnancy can be good for endometriosis.

No never heard of it.
I use to just carry on with my pill without taking a 7 day break if I was going on holiday.

GNs are not GPs. I think if the question was regarding health, it should be answered by a professional. Since it was posted on GN, it was just general Have-You-Heard conversation.

Hithere you are overreacting. Nobody knows BluebellGran or her granddaughter, they are unidentifiable.

My niece has used this a couple of times and was absolutely fine both times. For a joke I texted her to ask permission to post the preceding sentence, having explained your concerns. Her reply was a series of emojis mostly crying with laughter.

I hope your granddaughter has a lovely holiday with no concerns about having her period.

I’ve been asked to enquire if anyone has any information about Utovlan 5mg? My 16 year old granddaughter suffers cramps with her periods which have quite an impact on what she can do. She is going on 2 weeks holiday soon and her doctor has prescribed Utovlan to delay her period until she is home. Have any of you heard of this and know of any side effects please?

Absolutely fine. My daughter has used it a few times. So lucky to have this sort of treatment available. I would have loved this had it been around in my day!

Sorry correction the word heart should read heavy! None of my daughters have heart problems.
