Ironing mats?

I don't have a lot that requires ironing anymore so i was wondering wether ironing mats do actually protect the surface of whatever you are ironing on? Then I could get rid of the ironing board which at present resides upstairs as there is nowhere to keep it downstairs and I'd like to get rid.
So who has one and would my fairly new table be safe?

I have a table top ironing board no mat. I just use a towel on the worktop on holiday.

I had never heard of ironing mats till I saw this thread. Now I have googled them. Brilliant! Just what I need!
Thank you, OP.

I use an ironing mat for small items of craft work. I also have a heat mat that I put underneath it just in case!

I can't be bothered with the ironing board unless its a long dress. I put an extra thick bath towel on the bed and use that.

Our mum just used an old flannel blanket on the kitchen table - no ironing board. The blanket worked very well!

I have a tiny table top ironing board that fits in my understairs cupboard and I use it on the kitchen worktop .... on the rare occasions I iron anything.

Ironing boards are the work of the devil.

They are never tall enough, the cover always comes loose and gets stained and worst of all is the storage of the bloody things.

My neighbours, a lovely elderly couple, are both very hard of hearing. As Im sitting in my garden , I can hear every word of the TV program they’re watching. We did mention it once to them and it’s fair to say , the lady of the house didn’t take it well. As o didn’t want to fall out with them, I smoothed things over and things did improve for a while. I’ve tried wearing earplugs and also listening to music through my earbuds which obviously works but there are times when I would just like to enjoy some peace and quiet and read my book. Anyone else had this problem and how did you resolve it.

Overlyanxious you'd be better starting a new thread than on a thread about ironing. Try on the 'ask a gran' forum it will get noticed then.
