New mattress or new bed?

I believe that if you have a foam mattress you shouldn't have to turn or rotate it. I find foam very comfortable, but also too hot for me as I'm a very hot person!
I'd recommend a trip to John Lewis to try out mattresses, we've always bought there either during the sale or ex-display. They have the option of returning the mattress within a certain timeframe if you don't like it, though you have to put on a certain type of mattress cover which you buy at the same time.
Shops will obviously try to sell you a base as well as a mattress if they can, but it really isn't necessary as it sounds as though yours is the unsprung type if it has drawers.

I am also looking to get a new bed, now I am on my own I will get a double. I want a 4 drawer base but researching mattresses has been hard work. I think I have settled on a Simba hybrid it’s about £1300 but notice people are recommending Emma which is a bit cheaper. Another option which a few people have told me is good is the Premier Inn mattresses.

It’s a real headache.

I can recommend an emma mattress. I have one on my bed and haven't had hip pain since getting it.
I really want a new bed to put it on. The one I'm sleeping on is a metal framed bed which is too tall for me, my feet don't touch the floor when I sit on the edge of it.

Friends of mine have recommended the Emma mattress, when we were discussing buying a new bed. We have had our double pine bed for 28 years 😳, changed the mattress a few years ago. It is comfortable, but so very heavy when changing the bedding and difficult to move round, as one is advised to do. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I was having the same quandary a month ago. Big dips in the mattress and waking up every morning with aching shoulders. I dithered for ages and then went for it from an online company that delivers the next day. Can exchange after 50 days if it doesn’t suit. It is brilliant! Shoulder ache has gone. It wasn’t overly expensive as mattresses go, around £500 for the kingsize. Went for medium firm. I kept the old base as it has a firm top with drawers.

I have my original double pine bed base but have a relatively new sprung mattress. I can't lift it easily by myself but it seems ok. I wouldn't want a smaller bed.

Yours is a king-size but even so I would get a new mattress if you need one. If you are sure you need one 🙂

I replaced my super king size bed with a queen size (small double) profiling bed because I need to sleep slightly sitting up and with pegs raised a bit.
I went for the best hard mattress ... all made from natural materials .... and it was the most expensive part of the purchase... more than the bed and it's mechanism.

If you feel there is any chance that at some point you feel you might need a profiling bed it might be worth going for that now rather than expend a lot on a new mattress only to find you need to spend more again down the line.

My son has ViSpring. Their top one costs over £10,000!

My friend bought a vi-spring but unfortunately it was a little too hard for them, so waste of money.
What about those mattresses that come in a box? Emma.
I think they would probably be lighter.

We have recently replaced a mattress on a pine bed frame (no longer deemed fashionable but we like it).
We spent nearly £700 on a mattress and are well pleased with it.

Mixed opinions then.
Any comments on makes of mattresses, please?

Our old dunlopillo bed was sprung based, I just replaced the mattress.
Eventually we bought a king ottoman with beautiful winged headboard. Only downside is I find the wall light now isn’t bright enough to read as the wings block the light.
Some places offer a 30 night exchange on mattresses.
I would probably replace the whole lot either with a double or 2/3 bed.

cc is right, putting a new mattress onto a solid top base wont affect the quality.

We’ve replaced our mattress on both my late mother’s bed (when she was alone and using it!) and our own.

Both were unsprung divans with drawers.

It worked well.

I would just replace the mattress, especially if you really like your existing headboard.
Guidelines will encourage shoppers to spend more money -unless you are 100kg or more, I doubt your bedbase has deteriorated enough to compromise a decent quality new mattress.
Careful with the sizes though, not all "Kingsize" measure the same, get the tape measure out.

If your base is the firm type (ie not sprung) you should be able to put a new mattress on top of it. I'm guessing that if it has drawers this will be the case.
If you decide to buy a new base and the headboard is fixed to the wall it really won't matter how wide the bed is.

Yes, I would go for a new bed. You could still use the same bedding and may even be able to have the headboard adjusted to fit a double. These decisions aren’t easy to make, are they?
