Rat in my kitchen

Rats remain my room 13. I’m hopeless. Years ago, mr I was away, I was home with flu (real flu not a heavy cold 😇). I came downstairs for a lemsip. Let my rescue mingrel, my huge young labradoodle and my even bigger foster doodle into the garden. The doodle dogs fiubd a dying rat, who’d eaten the poison put down by the council rat man.
The rescue boy sensibly Came back into the kitchen. The doodles took to playing catch, throwing the rat to each other. I called them “drop it, come in”. They came in but my doodle was carrying the rat. She responded to a firm drop it as she came thriugh the utility. So I had a rat in the utility and three daft dogs in the kitchen, put my wellies on with my nightie and dressing gown and ran across the road to my neighbour, a police officer - he will help me I thought, he responded to my fears by telling me he’s phobic About rats. Fortunately. Y distress seemed to hit his good nature and public service dedication,. He said if I’d provide thick gardening gloves and. Strong black bin bag, he’d capture the rat. He did, the rat breathed its last, it was wrapped in the plastic bag ready to be collected by the council
Phew back to bed I went

A farmer's wife told me this. Put down a wellington boot, on it's side with a piece of cheese in the toe. Now this definitely works for mice.....but maybe rats are a bit more intelligent. He won't be able to get outside the boot. Hopefully. If not....you may be having some sleepless nights.

We called the council. It cost us about £70. The pest control man came and set traps with poison. He returned a couple of times until he was satisfied that the rats were eliminated. He told us that the poison used causes the bodies to dry up so that there's no smell and nothing to attract flies.

The smell might be bad but not as bad as all the blue bottles that will arrive to feast and lay their eggs

The rat went under the cupboards at lunchtime. I haven't seen it since. I hope it's found a way out. I hope it hasn't died there, the smell will be horrendous.
Field mice used to die in the wall of a previous house and the smell lasted for a few days.

Oh Minimoon how I sympathise. I’m sure I have PTSD from rats at my previous house (drain problem) the rats were in the walls, at first I could only hear them but then they found a route from under the FF. Unless it’s injured, I’m sure it won’t stay they for long. Is it an old house?

I've got just one electronic trap.
The rodent goes in, and doesn't come out.
That way I don't have to see anything.
A red light flashes when the trap is occupied.

Dont use poison of it dies somewhere in inaccessible it will take 3 weeks to decay
Try a trap if it's still there after 3 days get the pest control to find it.

You can buy something that will kill it or if you have lavender sprinkle some around the house as rats do not like lavender. I did this when it was eating my vegetables.
Many years ago, while we were renting in France a mouse dashed across the kitchen going under the fridge. What made it difficult was trying to explain in French to the owners!

Rats are very wary of traps. They can also smell if it has been handled by people You could try baiting the trap but not setting it. Use an old pair of dirty gardening gloves If the rat takes the bait. do it again Then when you have built up their confidence set the trap Have found it works Good luck and make sure there is no other food around

some neighbours and I had rats last year, I went into the kitchen one morning and found one sitting on my worktop with a box of cereal in its front paws, I had a bowl of fruit on my kitchen table and it had taken a huge chunk out of an apple and kiwi fruit, also gnawed a wooden spoon, and a pastry brush, I had to bin everything it might have touched pulled out cooker cupboards and washing machine,and scrubbed everything. Called pest control who put boxes of poison down
there has been no sign of them since. It cost £48 for 3 visits.

I’d be contacting pest control. No way would I be able to stand having a rat roaming around the kitchen (or anywhere else in the house, come to that). Our council will deal with rats but it is no longer a free service, but I’d rather pay than have vermin indoors.

Yesterday I looked out of my window and saw a rat outside. I banged on the wndow and it scurried away. Thankfully I no longer have a cat - though I miss having one - so hopefully it won't end up inside!

Just to be different - I had a bat come in the open door last evening, flying around the sitting room!! Luckily once the small table lamps were turned off, it found it's way out again!!🫣

We thought we had a mouse in and under the kitchen cupboard. Husband put in a baited mouse trap and it killed the rat cut it's head open
Think it got in at night, well late evening, when back door was open for a few hours because of the heat.

This happened to me.
They can't abide strong smells. I put essential peppermint oil on cotton wool balls and scattered around kitchen, left back door open and ratty scarpered.

Rent-o-kill it is..... 😞
Good luck with the humane trap.
Pest control seem to use poison. A df with mouse infestation has just called them in and poison has been put down.

Many Local Authorities offer a free rat extermination service

Not any more they don’t.

Our local authority tells you to use a private service.
