Petition to stop the EARLY RELEASE for PC Harpers killers

(170 Posts)

I think it utterly disgusting that PC Harpers ‘grinning’ killers are being released early after only 6 years.
The graphic details of his death are too harrowing to post on here.
The newly married pc had his whole life to look forward to, but thanks to these monsters he was dragged to his death.
There is a petition which you can sign & donate.
These men should have been given life in my opinion, without parole.

As we thought. Introduction of new legislation needed.

I’m satisfied with Andy Burnham as PM to date. He’s an experienced politician who isn’t afraid to be thoughtful as well as decisive. It’s feeling like a Labour government which will irritate some but is making me smile

Andy Burnham has said he is “increasingly confident” that Pc Andrew Harper’s killers will not be eligible for early release.

The Prime Minister said in a statement on Tuesday morning that he was determined that Albert Bowers and Jessie Cole, who were jailed for 13 years in 2020 for manslaughter, would serve their full sentences. (The Daily Tekegraph)

Lack of remorse does seem to be taken into account when someone is being considered for parole - so maybe that is the route to take?

A judge can also take that into account when sentencing, though I don't think the sentence can be increased beyond what the crime legally warrants.

Although many will disagree - maybe it should be taken into account when considering early release - albeit to free up more prison spaces.

Obviously public opinion in general cannot dictate the release programme, but the public must have faith in the judiciary. So maybe their obvious lack of remorse - in fact, they exhibited quite the opposite - should be addressed?

There are sometimes 'exceptions' to Rules and Law - is this one of them?

Casdons point on - what happens when new inmates are even worse than this crime then there is no room? It's a whole series of ghastly Hobsons' choices.

My heart is saying don’t let these little tykes out.

My head realises that they were passengers in the car and therefore not in control, I despise the way they acted in court and after they were sentenced.

But, the law is the law, and as it stands I guess they will be released early 2027.

Seem Burnham agrees with me.

Casdon Tue 11-Aug-26 13:47:06

No, Sunshinegirls, he agrees with me. Understand the implications, mitigate them, then act.

Exactly

Little tykes! Makes them seem like toddlers.
Clearly bad little swines- probably laughing & cheering in that car whilst that poor copper was being dragged around like fresh kill.

Tuliptree Wed 12-Aug-26 21:59:50

I’m from Yorkshire. I know what a tyke is and it isn’t a word to describe these two .

JenniRen Wed 12-Aug-26 22:03:17

We should never forget that this was a horrific death, just horrendous and deliberate, and these 'little tykes' were complicit and still seemed to find it amusing when they were in court.

The word should never have been used in the first place.

Only two things I hope for from Andy Burnham, is smash the gangs & keep these two little evil swines under lock & key to serve their full sentences.
If it had been my husband dragged to his death I would have liked to slap that grin right off both their. faces.

Wyllow3 Wed 12-Aug-26 23:49:10

Hmmmm,

I did reflect that had they been released they wouldn't have had a warm welcome. People may well express their feelings for right or wrong.
Prison may not have been the worst punishment. Some in prison might even have been - well...

They disgust me.

Tuliptree Thu 13-Aug-26 00:43:32

I get rather tired of ‘it had been my husband/daughter/grandaughter ‘ argument. Of course we would feel differently. That’s why we have a legal system because mo civilised society can leave retribution to heart broken relatives. And that’s before we factor in hatred and prejudice towards certain groups which skews vigilante justice and makes it anything but just.

eazybee Thu 13-Aug-26 09:04:08

The Law is generally just, but there is also injustice, which has to be remedied. That is the mark of a civilised society.

Tuliptree Thu 13-Aug-26 09:08:23

Yes and injustice should be remedied through the proper channels not just populist reaction picking off individual cases. That’s why this is complicated and has to done fairly to everyone not just the individuals in one particularly gut wrenching case.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 13-Aug-26 09:17:07

It was reported that 50 of the top police officers in the U.K. have signed a letter to Andy Burnham to stop the early release of these two individuals.

Also that the probation service is unable to cope with all the early releases, and they are talking about going on strike…

And I’m waiting for all these professional critics to say how the CJS will handle the shortage, indeed complete absence , of prison places for new people being charged who should be remanded in custody or those sentenced to imprisonment by the courts. That’s why it’s so difficult for the government. And the top police officers know full well that there is no lawful way to stop the release of these two without keeping the other 470 prisoners in the same category in. To do this, those 470 places have to be found elsewhere lawfully. I think the professional critics , especially the police, are behaving disgracefully jumping on this bandwagon. I might almost be tempted to see it as a distraction tactic from the Levy case where women were murdered because the police, inter alia, were not doing their job properly and in fact making value judgements about the low value of sex workers in taking crimes against them seriously. Shades of Peter Sutcliffe which proves how little they’ve learned. I believe the government desperately wants a solution but a lawful solution. We should applaud them for that and the police chiefs in particular should stfu and get back to the offices and do something about the misogyny snd violence against women and girls in our society and incompetence of areas of the police service in dealing with it

On LBC they were saying that there are hundreds of drivers serving a prison sentence for not having insured their vehicle. It is an offence, I know, but do they warrant taking up a prison space?
Also, why are we keeping thousands of people who are up for deportation in prison here? Why not turn that around? Deport them back to prisons in their own countries to serve their sentences. Let them bear the cost of imprisonment.
There would be enough places available in the UK and we wouldn't have to worry about criminals being given early release.

TerriBull Thu 13-Aug-26 09:56:10

Very dangerous men are being released all the time. One such person was Simon Levy who has just been sentenced to whole life for the murder of two women. A shocking example of someone who walked among us and went on to commit awful crimes. Prison is definitely a place for the most dangerous, they endanger society they're there for a reason. Possibly other solutions should be mooted for non violent offences.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 13-Aug-26 10:02:16

This is such an emotive subject. My heart says one thing but my head agrees with Tuliptree.

Don’t you think they are looking at that? Of course they are. If there were an easy solution they’d have found it by now. As for LBC if that was the Nick Ferrari show I’d take it with the proverbial pinch of salt

But it’s how he came to be walking around and it certainly wasn’t an early release scheme.

Tuliptree Thu 13-Aug-26 10:19:13

OK as usual I knew I was right. Driving without insurance is NOT ( pace GG) an imprisonable offence. This is how the right wing press operate - that could well have been on the charge sheet but there would have been other imprisonable offences involved. Sometimes it really helps to give your head a wobble and say how can it be true that there are 100s of people in prison only for driving without insurance and the govt hasn’t thought they could have early release? Do you see what the rubbish right wing press and social media has done to our critical faculties? And they do it deliberately to stop us addressing the issues that really matter but don’t suit their agenda
