Petition to stop the EARLY RELEASE for PC Harpers killers

It is life now for killers of emergency workers - this law was introduced after PC Harpers murder. But it can’t be applied retrospectively . As awful as this case is, we should all want to live in a society where the rule of law applies to all regardless of how terrible their behaviour is.

I signed the petition. I’m contident Andy Burnham can read the room. I’m not sure that legally, he can stop the early release of these two because they were passengers, not drivers.
Their behaviour during the trial indicates no remorse, no understanding of the impact of their behaviour, they made no attempt to stop the driver though they were all aware ‘something’ was being dragged.
I wonder about their behaviour in prison.

Yes absolutely we do. That goes for any emergency workers that are assaulted- stiffer sentences!

I think the public discourse on this has got a bit muddled - my understanding is that the ‘normal’ situation would be to be considered for parole halfway through their sentences. My guess is they wouldn’t have been granted it. After two thirds served they would have got ‘normal’ early release. Again my understanding is that the thinking behind this is to give an incentive for good behaviour and make prisons easier to manage. In the current ‘abnormal’ circumstances of course the plan is to give them ( and others in their category) another type of early release with supposedly enhanced post release supervision after half the time served. I think I’ve understood it correctly but the term early release seems to get used interchangeably and so muddies the waters. My overall thinking on this is that due process has to followed even if we don’t like what that means. I think AB is in a tough position as he is privy to knowledge about the knock on effects of not freeing up some prison places.

We both signed the petition yesterday when it was linked on "Next Door" website. I absolutely abhor the idea of these appalling criminals coming out,they're still so young, they need to be denied the freedom to have the experiences of a great big slice of their life that P C Harper will never have.

Thanks Tuliptree. The driver got 16 years, his two passengers 13 years each, convictions manslaughter.
Does this mean parole will be considered at six years or that early release is automatic under current guidelines. So far as I know, It won’t end their sentence, they will be on licence.
Am I right in thinking the details of their offence and lack of remorse won’t be considered. It should be imo

It was an awful crime and I agree that there should be no early release for them on the grounds that he was a policeman on active duty.
If AB is not reading the room on this matter, it worries me.

Is it in the PM’s remit to make individual exemptions?

I want to sign the petition and after doing narrowed down searches on the Gov website over a number of days then ended up trawling through the open ones but still can't find it. Found some interesting petitions during my search though and I've signed quite a few. Can some-one kindly pass on a link please?

The last Conservative government brought in mandatory life sentences for the killing of emergency workers killed whilst on duty.

To add insult to injury the caravan site they originated from has been refurbished at cost by the taxpayer. Rewards for crime. The whole system stinks.
