Dilemma

You can get engaged without a ring. A lot of couples go out and buy a ring together when the proposal has been accepted. How did he know about the ring in the first place? Suppose dd has actually said “no”? I think you have every right to ask him exactly what his intentions are and to ask for the ring back which after all was a gift, albeit indirect, for your dd not for him. Gaining possessions by giving false impressions is fraudulent. Not sure I’d want this man as a S-I-L. Are you sure of DD’s feelings?

Very odd and sorry to concern you but I think perhaps a bit dodgy
How did he know about the ring had it been talked about and admired by your daughter? Would it fit her finger ?
I would ask for it back as soon as and then if it’s not forthcoming after a few days tell him you will be telling your daughter and/or the police
How longs has she been with him and do you know him well, is it out of character, as you know him.
Sorry for being a doubting Thomas but I think it’s in the pawn shop April is 6 months ago !! Just saying

You obviously have a good reason to believe he's not going to propose 'any time soon', in which case don't hesitate to ask for the ring to be given back.

Under such circumstances he has absolutely no right to keep it.

Do you have any doubts about this individual as a suitable partner for your DD?

Ask for it back (exactly how is something I can't help with, as I don't know any of you). If he doesn't return it after a couple of weeks, ask again, then again. If there's still no joy, bypass him and mention it to your daughter - you are perfectly entitled to do that. I wouldn't normally be this insistent, but your mother's ring is too important to let it slide.

Then you could only give it to your daughter, after she accepts his proposal.

sweetpotatopie Sun 18-Oct-26 02:59:12

Yeah, I'd tell him you want it back for safekeeping since months have gone by with no proposal.

Grammaretto Sun 18-Oct-26 02:53:26

Are they still together? Ask for it back PDQ!!

I guess your DD told him about the ring, or how else did he know about it?
Sounds distinctly odd.

Time to give him the push

I would be telling my daughter what he had done and together we would ask for it back. If not forthcoming try reporting him for fraud - or tell him you will as well as informing his parents.

JenniRen Sat 17-Oct-26 22:37:08

Yes, ask for it back.
Don't let him have it again.

Bit different if it had been his family’s ring.
Quite.

Tworedroses Sat 17-Oct-26 22:29:02

I wouldn’t have given it to him. Get it back. Cheeky bugger.

MawsRosie Sat 17-Oct-26 22:26:53

He sounds a bit of a cheapskate, get that ring back ASAP!

Luckygirl3 Sat 17-Oct-26 22:11:32

I hope he has not pawned it!

I too would be asking for it back.

dragonfly46 Sat 17-Oct-26 21:58:00

I agree ask for it back.

NotSpaghetti Sat 17-Oct-26 21:53:26

Just say that you'd like to keep it safe until he's ready for it.
Don't ask him if he "minds".
Just state it as a fact.
That's what I'd do.

rafichagran Sat 17-Oct-26 21:42:31

Ask for the ring back. Unless it is used for its intended purpose it does not belong to him.
He had no right to keep it.

Fallingstar Sat 17-Oct-26 21:35:27

Ask for the ring back, say that seeing as the proposal hasn’t happened you would like to hold onto such a precious heirloom, and that actually you would prefer to keep the ring which will be passed onto your DD by yourself, so he should in this case buy his own engagement ring for her.

Charleygirl5 Sat 17-Oct-26 21:11:02

If he ever got round to proposing, would your daughter think it was her ring? Very odd.

I would definitely ask for it back. I wonder if he still has it?

Calendargirl Sat 17-Oct-26 21:04:18

Trying to picture our SIL asking to use my mother’s engagement ring to propose to our daughter?

Bit different if it had been his family’s ring.

How odd!

And no, I wouldn’t have given him it.

Shel1951 Sat 17-Oct-26 21:00:24

Get the ring back.

Greenfinch Sat 17-Oct-26 20:58:31

I would ask him how the proposal went.

Cossy Sat 17-Oct-26 20:57:01

I’d be inclined just to mention it very discretely and casually, if you can get him alone, and ask him if he’s chosen a date to propose and if he umms and arrrs I’d be inclined to ask if he’d like you to take care of the ring til he’s “ready”.

Shinamae Sat 17-Oct-26 20:55:22

I would definitely ask for the ring back..

akinnear44 Sat 17-Oct-26 20:51:35

Can I ask what would you do in my situation? Partner of DD told us he would like to propose to DD and asked if he could use my late mother's engagement ring which I inherited. I agreed and gave him the ring. This was back in late April and he hasn't proposed and we don't think it's going to happen any time soon and he hasn't mentioned it to us again. It is really beginning to annoy and upset me that he now has the ring. What should I do? Leave it alone or ask for the ring back? Any advice and thoughts would be very welcome.
