Hip pain and sleeping problems - any tips?

I have been suffering with hip/groin pain for a while now - I think it’s arthritis but I’ll go to the GP in the new year to confirm as I expect they are really busy now.
Anyway my big problem is sleeping as it is so painful when I wiggle that it wakes me up several times a night.
I have tried hot water bottles and a pillow between my knees but that just seems to get dislodged and doesn’t really help.
I’m also alternating ibuprofen and paracetamol in the evening before bed but is there anything else you kind, wise Grans know that I could try?

I was going to suggest the pillow between your knees but you have already tried that.

Are you using a normal pillow? You can get specially shaped pillows specifically for hip pain. It may not dislodge like a regular pillow. You can get them on Amazon.

I am struggling with knee pain (at night as well).Went to my GC’s nativity concert yesterday and they gave us the kiddies’ chairs to sit on. I just couldn’t get up from there and asked my son to give me his arm to hold on to , to pull my self. Of course, I had a mild lecture from him that I wasn’t exercising enough. He and his wife are exercise and diet freaks. He meant well I know, but I am just too lazy and too old to start exercising. 😫

Nannynoodles I take Ibuprofen 200mg x2 at night. It helps

Mine is bad enough for a codeine tablet at night, occasionally 2. I have ibuprofen and paracetamol the rest of the time but nights were horrible so GP has made the situation better by giving me this painkiller. It doesn’t seem to affect me other than stopping or reducing the pain so it’s all good.

Could it be, Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS]?
In which case a visit to the GP, and then maybe physiotherapy, may be advised.

Between now and GP visit, try not to sit in the same postion for too long, during the day.
May at least help sleep be a bit easier.

I have hip pain and find that one of the knee pillows helps greatly. It doesn't move. £19/20 in Asda.

The only thing that helps reduce my hip pain is cocodamol. I try to avoid it, but 3-4am, awake, in pain leads me to take two. I use the lowest level, available without prescription. I can’t take anti inflammatories sadly

Thank you Grans! I wondered about the knee pillows and have just ordered one off Amazon.
I think one of my problems is that I have always been a very restless sleeper - my husband says I’m rarely still.
Have also downloaded some easy exercises to try as long as I can get back up off the floor!

I am also a night sufferer Nannynoodles . I had an X ray over a year ago and an assessment soon after. I am on the waiting list for a new hip
Meanwhile, like you, I seem to be living on painkillers.
I spoke to a doctor yesterday and now have codeine to take if necessary, and tomorrow I have an appointment at the physio.

Do get some help. Your health is as important as everyone else's.

Nanny noodles there is a helpful thread which is on its 4 th iteration with plenty of advice and information on all things hips. It doesn’t always appear on Active but look at Heath on forums and you see will find us . lol for the dancing icons.
As for groin pain that is classic hip problems and you might want to get it checked,
Be careful of cocodomol (constipation) and good luck .

As for sleep deprivation I used pfenerghan which my dr prescribed but it can be bought over the counter too. It worked for me before and after my hip surgery. No need to take it every night but when you need to get son we sleep it is sometimes necessary.

In the past, with hip and back pain, I've put a pillow between my knees then wedged myself in with pillows tucked in along my back and front - anything to prevent rolling around in my sleep.

One bad spell of hip pain (on the side where I already have a replacement joint) was helped by a physio who manipulated my glutes and recommended exercises.

I hope you find a diagnosis and help soon.

I've got sudden hip pain which is bad at night, so I have to sleep on the other side. That, and taking paracetamol before bed means I can sleep reasonably ok.
Going to doctor for something else in January so will mention the hip too.
Might it be bursitis?
So maybe try not sleeping on that side Nannynoodles?

I am another one who is prescribed codeine. I only take it if I wake in pain but it is not needed every night. It also makes me drowsy which is helpful for getting back to sleep.

Try one of the topical creams perhaps?

I have to agree with this lady I too am in agony with both hip and knee pain and my kind doctor has given me cocodamol on prescription which has helped me enormously. I take paracetamol in the day and add a cocodamol if the pain is bad and I take two tablets before I go to bed. I was awake at 4.00am worrying about my husbands funeral arrangements and hurting so I took an extra tablet then, I still couldn’t sleep but at least I was resting.

Iam64 Thu 21-Dec-23 14:54:36

Celianne, apologies if I’ve missed a post but am I right I’m thinking you’re recently bereaved, planning your husbands funeral?
My hip pain started in November last year, a month after my husband died. An X-ray confirms some degenerative chsnges but only those expected in my age group. It’s some kind of inflammation in the bursa.

Before my hip replacement surgery my GP prescribed a low dose of Amitriptyline. It apparently helps relax muscles enough to allow sleep. It worked really well for me while I waited for my surgery. I took it early in the evening and slept all night. I was also prescribed Naproxen for the pain.

M0nica Thu 21-Dec-23 15:58:33

I would take paracetamol AND ibuprofen. It isperfectly safe. I was recommended to do it by my GP

Luckygirl3 Thu 21-Dec-23 16:07:04

I cannot take any painkillers that manage the pain. No ibuprofen because of gastric problems and nothing with codeine in because of a bizarre biliary problem called Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction - know as SOD!! - it causes spasm which makes me pass out.

I am going to the hospital for an injection in my hip joint, which is artificial, as nothing so far has hit the spot.

silverlining48 Thu 21-Dec-23 16:07:57

Celieanne flowers
Please be careful with coedine it can cause bad constipation.

Luckygirl3 Thu 21-Dec-23 16:08:09

I too have a similar drug to amitriptyline to help me sleep through the pain.

Fun getting older ain't it!

hulahoop Thu 21-Dec-23 16:39:15
