Just a light hearted question to see how well you know your history. Please resist the urge to google. Just have a guess.

What happened, on this date, a century ago as the clock neared midnight?

Ilovecheese Sun 03-May-26 16:46:32

Was it when Marilyn Monroe was born?

Whitewavemark2 Sun 03-May-26 16:48:13

I reckon the late Queen was born.

Ziplok Sun 03-May-26 16:49:10

I think the late Queen was born in April.

nexus63 Sun 03-May-26 16:49:49

was that the big industrial strike, i think i remember something about that from a quiz as today is a family birthday.

Devorgilla Sun 03-May-26 16:50:41

I will reveal all when a few more have tried. I have my bet on at least two regulars knowing/guessing what it is. My youngest daughter knew instantly.

Ziplok Sun 03-May-26 16:52:29

I was thinking more along the lines of the start of The General Strike.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 03-May-26 16:53:29

So 03/05/1926.

Hmm. Not the late Queen’s birthday.

All women got the vote?

MissAdventure Sun 03-May-26 16:54:37

I think it may have been when the queen was born, too, now Ziplok has said it.
I'd never have thought it up for myself.

Devorgilla Sun 03-May-26 16:55:37

Ok, nexus63 and Ziplok, the honour goes to both of you. At one minute to midnight the General Strike was announced. I am delighted to say some of my family and my husband's took part.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 03-May-26 16:56:32

How about first woman in parliament. Her name is on the tip of my tongue. I do know having lived there it was a Plymouth constituency?

Lady ?.?… grrr

Whitewavemark2 Sun 03-May-26 16:57:18

Oh! I thought that was 1929😄😄 just shows what I know

nexus63 Sun 03-May-26 16:57:55

i don't know what more you want, it was a general strike and the goverment declared a state of emergency.

Devorgilla Sun 03-May-26 17:03:31

Whitewave2, I'm glad you said the first woman in Parliament, as the first woman elected was Countess Constance Markievicz. Being an Irish Republican she did not take her seat as she would not swear allegiance to the monarch. Lady Astor had no problem with that and thus became the first woman in Parliament.

Devorgilla Sun 03-May-26 17:05:25

Nexus63, a big industrial strike could be anywhere. I did not specify UK. But I am just splitting hairs here and you deserve the accolade.

merlotgran Sun 03-May-26 17:09:32

The eve of the General Strike.

sixandahalf Sun 03-May-26 17:09:35

Is it David Attenborough? Birth?

MawsRosie Sun 03-May-26 17:10:42

General Strike?

Oreo Sun 03-May-26 17:31:20

Yes 1926 was the General Strike.
