To ask her for a short break was such a lovely gesture. If she doesn't take it up then it's perhaps not the right time. You did such a nice thing.

As a fellow widow, at this early stage she may well struggle being amongst couples (if you have a husband). I know, for me, it emphasised the fact that I was not part of a couple any more. You have kindly expressed your condolences, and I would now leave things as they are.

Dont swoop in now if you werent close. I would find it incincere or annoying at best, at worst: drama vampirism

If you have never been close I don’t see what more you can do other than express condolences.

I woukd not have expected to take up such an offer, however kindly intentioned, from someone I was not close to.

A woman I have known, but never been close to, since our college days told me in reply to my Christmas card that her husband died in May.

I wrote back at once, offering condolences and said that if she feels like a short break any time next year, we will be pleased to see her. We live at opposite ends of the country.

If there anything else you think I could do?

I know many on GN are widows, so I hope some of you have some hints.
