My husband died as a result of a malignant melanoma at the age of 40, decades ago. He was Australian, and as a child had run around in the sun without thought of danger. He was fair skinned and freckled. His brother is still alive. He has a more olive skin better suited to the sun.

Thank you for your kind words. I just wanted people to be made a where of what could happen. My husband malignant melanoma just appeared. His oncologist thought it was set down in childhood. He was born 1957 . Sun tan cream wasn't about much . It was mainly sun tan oil. Which if your parents could afford it used to just fry your skin or we didn't use anything. It can lie dormant in our bodies for decades and just become active. There is no trigger. It just happens.

A dear friend of mine died of skin cancer when he was only in his fifties. I was told years ago that women need to check the back of their legs as moles etc can be missed in areas like that. I’m so sorry for the loss of your husband Whiff.

Oh Whiff how sad. It must have been an awful time for you all. Thank you for posting this painful reminder for us all to check out any odd moles or skin blemishes.
Gosh life's unfair.flowers

Just read Sean Locke had skin cancer 31years ago and it was that cancer that killed him.

My husband was diagnosed with a grade 4 malignant melanoma on the side of his face in his hair line by his right eye in January 2001 and was given 5 years to live . He became terminal in October 2003 . He had 3 tumour's in his right lung , 1 in his chest and 2 in his brain by the optical nerve. He died 4 days after his 47th birthday in February 2004 When he died 2,000 people a month where dieing of skin cancer I think the figures are higher now.

Hopefully people will take more care with the sun. Always wear high factor suntan cream whenever going out in the sun. Even on a sunny winter's day.

During summer sunny days wear a hat and sun glasses. Any age can get skin cancer .

My husband died in agony unable to breath. Skin cancer isn't talked about enough. It's what I call a Cinderella cancer. All other cancers get all the attention but skin cancer is left in the background.

If you have a mole or spot that looks odd. Look at pictures of them and if in doubt get a medical opinion.

If I have got one of you to look at any odd marks then writing this has been worth it.

I was very sad to hear of the passing of Sean Locke. I always watched 8/10 Cats does Countdown and found him a genuine funny man. RIP Sean, you will be missed

I was very sad to hear this.
I really enjoyed his humour, and he seemed a decent sort, too.

I was very sad to hear this. He has been living with cancer for many years apparently. Which just goes to show that you can live with this disease and have a very fulfilling life. RIP

I’ve only just discovered 8 out of 10 cats and was enjoying watching the old repeats but can’t now because things like this really get to me. So I switched over from a repeat of 8 out of 10 cats last night (even though he wasn’t actually in it) only to find myself watching a film starring Heath Ledger and couldn’t watch that either. Sean was absolutely brilliant.

Georgesgran Thu 19-Aug-21 16:38:41

Very shocked - I’d only been watching an old episode of 8/10 cats the previous evening. A cruel disease.

timetogo2016 Thu 19-Aug-21 14:41:32

Such sad news about Sean Locke,i was shocked to say the least.
A genuine funny man and a genuine nice man.
My heart goes out to his family and friends.
RIP Sean, you will be missed so much.

DC64 Thu 19-Aug-21 14:21:46

So so sad - he was one of the funny guys, naturally funny. Loved him on cats do countdown - 58 is no age / cancer is a cruel disease!

Alioop Thu 19-Aug-21 13:56:26

So sad, loved him in Mock the Week and 8 out of 10 Cats. Only 58, so young. Such a funny guy who will be missed.

JdotJ Thu 19-Aug-21 11:58:41

He was such a funny chap. Dh and myself saw a recording of QI where he was one of the panel and he had us in stitches, both on & off camera. Also saw him in one of his stand-up shows in London.
A great loss.

Buttonjugs Thu 19-Aug-21 11:51:30

I admit I shed a tear. I have an adult son with ASD and we bond through comedy. I love to hear him laugh and Sean made him laugh a lot. He will be a huge loss to his family and friends. Such a shock to us.

cupcake1 Thu 19-Aug-21 11:47:36

Genuinely funny man. So sad and 58 is so young ?. RIP Sean and thank you for all the laughs.

HannahLoisLuke Thu 19-Aug-21 11:11:50

Because I don’t watch 8 out of 10 Cats anymore his name didn’t ring any bells. Then of course I saw some clips and realised I knew his face very well. Such a funny and seemingly genuinely nice man. Very sad.

Rileysnana Thu 19-Aug-21 10:47:11

Sean Lock a brilliant quick witted razor sharp stand up. Brilliant panel show captain and guest. Cats does countdown will never be the same again. Condolences to friends and family. RIP Sean you can't write tears ???

Namsnanny Thu 19-Aug-21 10:45:44

I too was very shocked to read this post.
I didn't see anything about him being ill.
His family must have wanted to keep it private.
I don't blame them.

Theoddbird Thu 19-Aug-21 10:41:03
