My friends parter died at 49 not in work....from a heart attack at home....she's left with a 12 and 14 year old so think she will be eligible

Sorry, you're right. I misread the eligibility criteria:

www.gov.uk/bereavement-support-payment/eligibility

Assuming that your friend's partner paid NICs, the death doesn't have to have been caused by an accident at or disease caused by work.

How interesting! Never heard of this.

I think it's only for people whose partner was under state pension age when he/she died and died because of an accident at work or a disease caused by work (could be wrong), so not many people will be eligible anyway.
