I have already posted on here about being recently widowed and being on my own for Christmas this year which I was dealing with. However, for some reason the other day I decided, completely on impulse to book a break for the 3 days between Xmas and NY in a local hotel in my home town of Blackpool. It will be the first time I have ever been on a break on my own as I was married for 53 years and we did everything together. I think it will do be good, get me out of my rut and there will be entertainment on every night and meals provided at half the cost of the Xmas period, so I am starting a new tradition for myself. Most of the people there will be from other towns and hopefully they will be friendly But I am also nervous, looking forward to it one minute and dreading it the next. It doesn't help that people keep saying "going on your own" in a sympathetic voice Have I done the right thing I will let you know how I get on

Sounds good. Onward and upwards BA69. I love staying in hotels whatever is happening in my life and you deserve to be waited on after a difficult time.🎄💕

My husband hates holidays so I go alone. I'm now 85.
I go abroad as well as here in the UK and have always enjoyed myself. As advised, if you are uncomfortable eating alone -take a book or kindle, and don't be shy at talking to strangers.

What a good idea and well done booking it.
I keep meaning to try something similar but haven't yet.

I've invited myself to my DS for a couple of nights followed by NY at DSis. It should be OK and a chance
to see them.

Let us know how it goes BA69

I think it’s great, have a lovely time. I’ve not done it in a hotel but have gone back to where I’ve lived most of my life for a break and stayed alone in an Airbnb . However having all your meals provided sounds fab. Enjoy and do exactly as you like that can be very freeing I find

Astitchintime Thu 19-Dec-24 17:03:02

Well done BA69 and I hope you have a fabulous time.

Brilliant idea , I am sure you will enjoy at least you will not have to think about preparing a meal and washing up.

Parsley3 Thu 19-Dec-24 16:42:14

Excellent idea, well done you. Have a lovely time.

Juniewoonie Thu 19-Dec-24 16:33:21

I think it’s a fabulous idea, I’m sure everyone will be friendly and I bet the staff go the extra mile to look after you. In fact I might even copy your idea xx

BA69 you could contact the hotel and ask if they make any arrangements for solo travellers, eg a particular table in the dining room you can sit at with others if you would like to.
I've heard of that happening on cruise ships.

You will have a lovely time! Good for you , enjoy your stay. It's a brave move but I feel sure you will not regret it . Let us know how much you enjoyed it when you get home.

I booked myself into a hotel in York just for a few days. I loved it. I was a bit nervous going alone but I had a great time. I think you will enjoy it and it gives you confidence to do more. I have stayed in other places on my own since and never regretted it. Have a lovely time!

That sounds great. My dad booked a short Christmas break for himself, after my mum died. The fact that all the meals are laid on and there is entertainment made it ideal. I hope all goes well and that you have a nice time.

This is something I would love to do if I was well and able. I have friends who always go to hotels for Christmas and I did suggest it to my husband one year, oh dear it didn’t go down very well he wanted to be with the ‘family,’yes so did I but it was hard work for me and a couple of days away would have been heavenly.
I hope you have a lovely time and look forward to hearing from you afterwards.
Ps I love Blackpool, spent some wonderful holidays there, I quite envy you ☹️

Sounds like a great idea. Wish I had thought of it!

I think it is a fabulous idea. You will not have to think of what to buy and prepare for a few meals, and what better place to spend the time than Blackpool? I am sure there will be a lot of entertainment if you do not fancy what the hotel provides.

I think that is a super idea BA68. I’m sure you will enjoy yourself, but if you find that you are not then you are near enough to home to go home.

There will be others who have travelled alone, too, I’m sure.

Do let us all know how you got on.

Patsy70 Thu 19-Dec-24 13:43:00

That sounds such a good idea BA69. I’m sure you will thoroughly enjoy it. 🎄💐

Doodledog Thu 19-Dec-24 13:25:39

That sounds like a great way to spend the time between Christmas and NY. It can drag a bit, but being away will give you plenty to do, and different people to talk to.

Have a great time, and do let us know how you get on?

Grannynannywanny Thu 19-Dec-24 13:22:15

Good for you BA69. I hope you have lovely break🎄

Chocolatelovinggran Thu 19-Dec-24 13:18:52

Great idea BA69. Eat, drink, and be merry .

MissAdventure Thu 19-Dec-24 13:04:08

I think I'd like a break myself, tucked away in a country house, with open fires, and peaceful surroundings.

Jennerdysphoria Thu 19-Dec-24 13:01:01

Thanks, MissAdventure, yes I am looking online.

MissAdventure Thu 19-Dec-24 12:57:58

Have you looked at any breaks online?

There may be some bargains to be had, tucked away in peaceful surroundings.
