I have already posted on here about being recently widowed and being on my own for Christmas this year which I was dealing with. However, for some reason the other day I decided, completely on impulse to book a break for the 3 days between Xmas and NY in a local hotel in my home town of Blackpool. It will be the first time I have ever been on a break on my own as I was married for 53 years and we did everything together. I think it will do be good, get me out of my rut and there will be entertainment on every night and meals provided at half the cost of the Xmas period, so I am starting a new tradition for myself. Most of the people there will be from other towns and hopefully they will be friendly But I am also nervous, looking forward to it one minute and dreading it the next. It doesn't help that people keep saying "going on your own" in a sympathetic voice Have I done the right thing I will let you know how I get on

BA Blackpool brought back happy memories of my childhood . When my dad his car we went to Blackpool every year to see the lights . Went for the day and after dinner changed into our pjs and dressing gowns . We had pillows and blankets on the back seat . Dad would drive down on side then the other so we could see all the lights . And then mom would make my brother and me a bed on the back seat no seat belts in those days and we would sleep on the 3 hour journey home .
When we had our own children took them from babies but only for a few years because my health got worse . But you saying about going to Blackpool brought all those happy memories back thank you.

I hope you are having a lovely time .

Went to Blackpool looking for an Indian restaurant. The policeman we asked laughed. Not for me but know you will have a fabulous adventure. When my mum was very ill I travelled a long way to help her and she put me in the Orwell hotel in Felixstowe. I was alone but made to feel very welcome.

When my oldest grandson saw Judith , he held out his little arms and said "Nanny" smile

My mum was cross, because she couldn't stand her!

DH and I have often stayed in a seaside hotel for New Year. There are usually several ladies on their own. We always make a point of talking to them as do other guests and they are seated together if they wish. Go with an open mind and you’ll enjoy the break.

Great idea, have a lovely time. I grew up in Blackpool and when I was a student I worked during the holidays, in a midsized/large hotel on Central Prom.
The Christmas holidays were always fun, didn’t feel like work, and by the time the festivities were over everyone knew everyone else staying there for the Christmas period and it became like family.
People from all walks of life, some solo, some couples, some in friendship/family groups- all had one thing in common, to enjoy their time and let others spoil them.
Hopefully you’ll find similar and will have a great few days away. x

Have a nice little break and enjoy yourself mingle and get to know like minded people. It could be a new tradition you start for yourself when you have a quiet time come back to us and chat away🎄

Well done BA69 for booking yourself a short holiday. 👍

My friend who has now been a widow for 20 years has booked holidays on her own from the very start. She has stayed in caravans, small hotels, Premier Inns. Then she has visited places of interest in the locality.

She eats out at lunchtime then takes a picnic to her bedroom in the evening and watches the tv.

You are part of a trend of resilient women.

Great choice BA69, get out there and live for the moment. Have a lovely time x

NotAGran55 Fri 20-Dec-24 06:56:17

Have a great time BA69. I would do the same in your shoes too. Look forward to hearing all about it.

Whiff Fri 20-Dec-24 06:46:15

BA69 you will soon get friendly with people and find others doing it for the same reasons you are . Your husband would be proud of you . While you miss your other half of yourself you still have a life to live and he wouldn't want you to be alone over Christmas. So have a ball and make new friends and raise a glass or 2 to the love of your life and wish him happy Christmas. 🎄🥂
