Our latest Gransnet guest blogger is Amanda from The Women's Room. Her post - What not to wear takes a look at fashion trends best avoided at all costs by those of us who are now a little older and wiser.

Do you agree with her list? And what would you add to it?

I seem to remember there should have been a dog on a lead. But they missed it off and now it just looks - a bit rude really.

Add elasticated waistbands to the list together with beige anoraks!

I have to disagree with several of the "What Not To Wear" suggestions.

Some of these depend entirely on how fit you get yourself, and who you regularly socialise with.

I am a retired research scientist who has to work because like so many women in this country I don't have any proper pension. So I took the plunge some years ago and rebuilt my skills in aerial circus arts on trapeze, aerial hoop, silks and rope. I now teach these aerial circus arts and aerial dance in physical theatre for my living. My doctors tell me I must never stop doing this because it has got me amazingly fit again. I have now also taken up rock climbing as a hobby.

The result of this is that I now mostly socialise with young adults who are between a third and a half of my age. I have to fit in with the groups I socialise with, and so I dress accordingly.

I find that I wear lycra a lot, especially lycra leggings which I wear for work and for social life. I often wear denim hotpants with the leggings, which my young friends think looks good. I also often wear long drop-waist jumpers with leggings or jeggings which also looks good if you have a reasonably fit figure.

My cover picture on Facebook shows me in lycra with denim hotpants. The photo was taken by a friend I climb with who is a third of my age and dresses the same. This photo can be seen here: [http://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/841065_10200576663006895_1678595338_o.jpg]

I also often wear racer-back tops, but I wear them with racer-back bras rather than go bra-less. And in summer I often wear denim hotpants without leggings because nobody minds a few creases on your knees if your legs are fit and muscular instead of fat and flacid.

The answer therefore is to put in the dedication and determination to getting fit and staying fit, and you can then wear lots of these things and look good, at the same time as enjoying life more and haveing more friends.

Exactly! Who are these people who dictate what we may or may not wear? Look at some of theyounger frights out there - fat legs, leggings/jeggings, big hoop earrings, scuffed ballet pumps , phone glued to ear, huuuuuuge fake handbag, Croydon face lift (hair scraped back if you didn't know) and exposed muffin tops bulging out of tight t shirts. If some girls look like that at 20, what on earth will they be like at 60?

UnigranMA Thu 04-Apr-13 21:00:31

No heels! - I'm only 5' 1"

No trainers!- chasing grandsons round the park, up the climbing frame etc.

No Onsie or Uggs - it's WINTER!

No high street lace - really?

And as for peplums, I'm petite and there's nothing wrong with a smart suit jacket with a peplum!

Leave us grans alone! hmmwink

I prefer side zips they are much more flattering to my apple shape. Very difficult to find though.

Galen Sun 24-Mar-13 17:58:26

You can't do that with trousers thoughhmm

annodomini Sun 24-Mar-13 17:56:00

Me too, Galen. I have limited mobility in my left arm and cannot pull up a zip. It's easier with a skirt because I can pull it up in front and manoeuvre the skirt round.

Ariadne Sun 24-Mar-13 17:29:14

I tried on a floral print tunic in East and think I looked like a small and squashy sofa...

Galen Sun 24-Mar-13 17:29:06

I hate side zips. I find them very difficult with my arthritis

pansy Sun 24-Mar-13 17:05:27

I do agree about side zips.. a much better silhouette!

Nomdeplume Sun 24-Mar-13 17:00:45

When most of us have a tummy as the waist exapands my question is - Why do retailers keep stocking trousers that fasten at the front I wonder? Some have side zips which is great. With front zips it's particularly bad when you have a sweater over the top of the zip - it adds an inch and the outline shows through.

Lilygran Sun 24-Mar-13 08:25:49

I think I've posted about this before but what annifrance says reminds me - why is it so difficult to get inexpensive PLAIN clothes these days? Bits of lace and frills and bows and sequins and buttons used as decoration and embroidery AND now we have an epidemic of 1930s 1940s motifs on the fabric! Plus the well-established floral riots that took over a couple of years ago and are still everywhere on everything.

Heels are OK - they don't have to be really high - flat shoes can put a strain on flat feet. Wraparound dresses can look very nice. Trainers are OK with trousers/jeans and are more comfortable/practical for long walks.

Most people have a reasonable idea what suits their height and shape and know what they feel comfortable in.
