Our latest Gransnet guest blogger is Amanda from The Women's Room. Her post - What not to wear takes a look at fashion trends best avoided at all costs by those of us who are now a little older and wiser.

Do you agree with her list? And what would you add to it?

FlicketyB thanks for the link, loved the photos. I think that's the way I'll go!

granny gringrin! And it might hang out underneath the legs - not what you want with your bra! It was a bit of a nuisance when it was your vest, too!

I fancied one of these seamless, longer length soft bras, but as I'm only 4ft 11 , I might have to tuck it in my knickers, like you did with your vest when you were a child,

This item must be the definitive comment on what is 'suitable' for older women. Two stunning, yes stunning, centenarians who succeed in even making their walking sticks look like elegant accessories

I don't care if I live to be 100 , I'll never wear one of these fleeces with animals on them, eg, wolves, bears , kittens, they look wonderful with black leggings and white trainers

gringrinto both comments!

JessM grin ... she certainly can't see who she's sitting next too!!

But had you see the thing Zara had on her head ...they gave a bird's eye view when she entered the Cathedral ...it reminded me of those long balloons that get twisted into headgear!! shock

JessM Tue 05-Jun-12 14:23:14

Camilla appears to be wearing a hat that is not so much headwear as an Olympic venue.

He didn't did he?
or she?
Duch of Cambridge has certainly influenced fashion. While out shopping you would swear that the whole nation was going to spend its summer in garden parties, and that they were all suited to wearing skin tight dresses in primary colours.
It was a relief to pop into Zara, who, being Spanish, and not influenced by Kate's style, are doing lots of neutral colours. Restful on the eye after the visual assault that is a department store fashion department this season. Nicer things than Zara has had for years too e.g. cream silk shirts

What not to wear? Your fur cloak caught up in your knickers if you are Lord Mayor of the City of London flag and preceding the Queen crown into St Paul's Cathedralgrin

I keep looking longingly at those soft, all in one piece bras,as they look so comfy, and I'm fed up with underwires digging in when I sit down for any length of time. shock
It would be the end of glamour in my undie drawer!

At 63 I thought it was time I threw away my G-string knickers so I have and boy am I comfortable now.

I think you should wear what you feel comfortable in and is appropriate for what you are doing e.g. if you are at keep fit wear leggings and trainers or if you are going out to a posh do, then high heels and long skirt/dress is the code as far as I am concerned, as long as I don't have to walk far.

Having said that, I must admit I have been going through a stage where I didn't want to look like 'mutton dressed as lamb' but I didn't want to look frumpy either, getting that balance is very difficult. I almost feel like I have someone elses body and I WANT MINE BACK!!!

Podiatrist insists on lace-up shoes with prosthetic inserts AND I even have to wear something under my instep otherwise in agony. This is all death to smart shoes. I had almost given up, though have just bought some cream brogues which I really like. Any suggestions anyone?

Crocs are sufficiently moulded to be very comfortable to wear, none of that collapsing arches feeling, and weigh nothing if you are packing a weekend bag.

I thought so too!

bags I couldn't agree more!

JessM Wed 30-May-12 07:05:44

I was sitting in Tesco cafe yesterday afternoon having a meeting. It is separate from the store and you can see all the centre users wandering past. Treated to vision of a youngish woman in her dressing gown and tartan pyjama pants having a chat with her friends hmm

I agree about the important thing being how one wink feels about one's appearance, but I shall be glad if the Duchess of Cambridge Effect (or anyone else's) can somehow bring back a little elegance.

nanaej Tue 29-May-12 22:03:58

FeeTee I like your thinking!

FeeTee Tue 29-May-12 15:39:47

nanaej - I flaunt my ample cleavage on the basis that if the eye is drawn to the area it will be distracted from the lumps and bumps elsewhere. My husband who used to work in banking calls this "asset management"

absent - I saw someone at the weekend wearing, well, I am not entirely sure how to describe it but it was essentially very short shorts attached to a billowy boob tube, all in some sort of flowery fabric. The woman was enormous...but seemed so confident in what was (in all honesty) the most frightful and unflattering outfit that I started to wonder if it doesn't actually matter what you look like but how you feel.

Anagram Tue 29-May-12 14:45:21

Bet she hasn't seen herself from the rear, either, absent! grin
