Our latest Gransnet guest blogger is Amanda from The Women's Room. Her post - What not to wear takes a look at fashion trends best avoided at all costs by those of us who are now a little older and wiser.

Do you agree with her list? And what would you add to it?

Mind you, I didn't see her from the rear. grin

I have just seen a woman about my age (sixties) who probably weighs somewhere around 15 stone wearing skin-tight black and white vertically striped leggings (au Marcel Marceau) with the "waist" located just south of her very substantial bosom. I don't know whether to applaud her sheer gall or to be horrified. grin

Our eldest daughter (natural) has Rebekah Brooks type hair but has had it cut to a bob length since someone pointed out the likeness!

Anagram Tue 29-May-12 13:28:43

No, can't say I've noticed either effects round here! Rebeka Brooks' hair is just long and curly - it's not so much a style as a natural explosion! grin

Has anyone else noticed the Duchess of Cambridge effect on what young women are wearing? In this student area where I live, the ensemble of choice still seems to be skimpy, skimpy but I have noticed a trend towards the use of more fabric among some of the residents. Even more so among television presenters and celebs. Also, has anyone else noticed the spread of the Rebekah Brooks hairstyle?

Oh dear I am a fashion disaster too! I have nearly all the items in my wardrobe and bought a floral print skirt today! I also fail the too much cleavage bit..it is hard as they say wear v necks to make your boobs look less ginormous prominent but then your cleavage is on displayblush
I would simply add that it ought to be law that no outer clothing made of lycra should be made in any size over an 8!!

Grannys wear cargo pants to hold all the 'stuff' GCs give them to put in their pockets grin

Please add long denim skirts to the list - unflattering to all sizes - doesn't hide a thing and looks plain dowdy. I've seen loads of long skirts with heels again not flattering. Jogging bottoms are fine for home or gym but unless you are young and shapely don't wear them out and about. Casual trousers or jeans would be better. Cargo pants are ugly on young people so why do grannys wear them? I know we get to an age when comfort outweighs style sometimes - but we don't have to look a bunch of frights do we?

Book clubbish means looks very comfortable, but edgy at the same time? Like Birkenstocks, or as my book club friend used to say "Those lesbian shoes"grin

SOOP Mon 09-Apr-12 13:11:03

Merrells are so my style. Aluminium, in my size, is out of stock. Good looking shoes. Must be really comfortable. x

syberia Mon 09-Apr-12 12:16:47

Thank you! Have been trying to find some sandals, this site looks perfect x

Libradi Mon 09-Apr-12 11:45:16

Like the look of these www.merrell.com/UK/en-GB/Product.mvc.aspx/28153W/66644/Aluminum/J89674?dimensions=0

Had to be nosy and google 'Merrills' I love them! Really fancy a pair of the barefoot life wonder glove. I've given up on being able to wear anything high as I have all sorts of problems with my feet and balance so these look ideal for me grin

Annobel Mon 09-Apr-12 11:30:16

'Book clubbish'? Now I'm worried.
glamma and butter, I've managed to get genuine Crocs on Ebay for very reasonable prices. You just have to keep an eye on the bidding and jump in at the last minute unless it goes too high. 'Buy it now' Crocs are rarely a bargain.

glammanana Mon 09-Apr-12 11:26:39

butternut go for the style that has the strap that can go over the front or around your heel they should then stay on all the time.smile worth while buying the original ones not the copies, expensive but well worth it mine are 6 yrs old now and look as good as new.

gracesmum Mon 09-Apr-12 11:25:01

I have some Merrills after watching a lady trying on a pair in a shoe shop. She explained they were for her holiday in New York and they are so comfortable you can walk miles and all day in them. Unfortunately she bought the last reduced pair so I had to pay the full price - not cheap, but how much money do we spend on cheaper alternatives that turn out to be not very good, so you try something else etc etc so a false economy? They are very comfortable and look quite trendy in a book clubbish sort of way - you know what I mean!

Double-sided tape, Butternut?

wiccibat Mon 09-Apr-12 10:15:23

I love my Jeggings grin

Annobel Mon 09-Apr-12 10:04:42

Blu-tack.

bagitha Mon 09-Apr-12 09:53:34

Glue?

Butternut Mon 09-Apr-12 09:52:30

I want Crocs envy, but my insoles won't stay inside them without slipping and sliding around which is no good ! Anyone got any ideas of keeping them in place??

Ariadne Mon 09-Apr-12 09:41:14

I too love my Crocs, though, unlike bagitha, it's because my feet are a mess! I wear them as much as possible, and, together with my desert boots (suede, but also in a lovely Liberty print) and my sheepskin bootie slippers, keep me comfortable.

Mind you, I did find, in Durban, a pair of Crocs sandals which are quite smart! So - sorted!

Magrithea Sun 08-Apr-12 10:40:17

I quite agree! I can't wear flats anyway - never liked the look and now, with dodgy ankles after sprains and surgery, can only wear a modest heel sad High heels of my youth are distinctly dangerous though I do teeter around hanging on to husband!!

bagitha Sun 08-Apr-12 06:45:09

I wear crocs too, mainly at home. It's too cold where I live to wander about, even indoors, with bare feet. If you have foot-shaped feet, unsquashed by years of tight shoe wearing, crocs are fabulous. Had to get some new trainers for DD the other day and bought some summer ones for myself – Merrell "Barefoots" – which will give me more grip on our mountain slope of a garden. I wore them with socks yesterday (I have cold feet!) but they can be worn without. They'd be good as dinghy shoes too. The great thing about them is that I can wriggle my toes happily. As a keen dancer who needed her toes for grip, I could never wear shoes that cramped them.

People who despise crocs are just jealous, I reckon, that those of us who wear them have undamaged feet [wink!]. Croc Snobs!

Actually, I have arthritis in my feet, which can be painful. Another reason not to cramp my still good-looking feet. smile

Annobel Sat 07-Apr-12 23:57:35

Very comfy, are crocs. i managed to shrink a pair by putting them in the dishwasher!
