Our latest Gransnet guest blogger is Amanda from The Women's Room. Her post - What not to wear takes a look at fashion trends best avoided at all costs by those of us who are now a little older and wiser.

Do you agree with her list? And what would you add to it?

Love my Cross, I've got more than one pair! Wear them instead of slippers, SO confortable

I loved wearing my croc's in the kitchen of our restaurant every night I would put them in the washing machine and there they were all clean and hygenic ready for the next day, they had micky mouse ear shapes cut out on the front of them they are so comfortable to wear.In the winter you can buy little fur socks to wear with them,I also love my ugg boots but must admit they do make your feet look a bit ducklike.

And mine!

My Granny (of the salmon pink corsets and bloomers!) never wore a bra in her life! It would seem she was only concerned with 'holding in', not 'holding up'!

jeni Sat 07-Apr-12 22:41:19

How posh!
My granny told my mother and her sister," you'll regret not wearing corsets, my girls"
As she was 4ft 10 1/2? Tall and definitely broad on the beam!
She rather resembled queen Victoria, who she could remember!

My gran wore those corsets too, but she got them "made to measure" by a Spirella lady. She also, apparently, took my mother there after she'd had me. It was important because otherwise you never got your figure back; you had to be held in!

So that's where I went wrong - no corsets!

netgran Sat 07-Apr-12 22:21:51

Not sure the men would agree they were passion killers!!!

Whoops love my crocs, especially for gardening in the summer.

jeni Sat 07-Apr-12 22:11:53

netgran Sat 07-Apr-12 22:10:59

Wear what suits you and you feel comfortable in, Uggs love em.

My mother, who was born in 1898, also wore the salmon pink corsets and also huge bras with very wide straps, from Ambrose Wilson. Now why can I remember that and not where I put things yesterday!

jeni Wed 04-Apr-12 10:48:50

Directoire knickers!

Anagram Wed 04-Apr-12 10:30:07

Oh, so did mine, jeni - and salmon pink bloomers!

I remember Rollins. Horrible, uncomfortable things. Mine kept on rolling I places it shouldn't. My gran used to wear salmon pink corsets complete with whalebone stiffeners, laces up the backhand fasteners all down the front!

I remember having a roll-on! It was purple, and I'd lusted over it after seeing it in the local drapery shop window. I can't remember how much it cost, but I 'paid it up' weekly. I was 15! grin

Come to think of it, a long line panty girdle was probably almost as good as a chastity belt. They were horrible to wear. I think it is much better to rely on your muscles to hold things in!

Anagram Tue 03-Apr-12 22:52:32

Those roll-ons were still about in the early 60s, Greatnan (at least, in the N W of England! I remember I had a yellow one, but there was no question of it being a passion-killer - no one but me ever saw it! It did do quite a good job of holding in my tummy though wink.

The fashions in the mid 50's were lovely - full circle skirts, sweaters and little sweater-scarves - I had a good bust and the styles suited me. I wish I had kept some of my dresses - they have come right back into fashion and I am now almost back to my weight when I was 17.
The worst thing were 'foundation garments'. We used to wear horrible roll-ons with suspenders - real passion killers!

Sorry, but I love crocs! They are very comfy round the house, great for gardening as you can just run them under the tap, and they keep your feet warm!

Wouldn't be seen dead in them out and about though! grin

Libradi Tue 03-Apr-12 18:55:02

Super I love your outfit!

MoominMamma Tue 03-Apr-12 17:06:08

I'd add Crocs to the list - just as ugly as Uggs and make any feet look fat and frumpy. Moccasins or Penny loafers are much better.

Joan Tue 03-Apr-12 11:11:10

Oh yes, Kittylester we were so lucky with fashion back in the 60s
